Classic Newfoundland - Are Prices On The Rise?

As a follow on to my earlier post, it feels like this thread needs a stamp image.
so here is the Newfoundland stamp that I believe I got as a bargain at a local stamp show.

its OX1 in Unitrade, an XF, watermarked and used stamp...with a catalog value of $900 for VF.
In the better NSSC catalog its listed as OS1, with a realized value of $720.

Enjoy the other stamps here too...but the OS1 is the Dead Letter Stamp on the left--its black on blue paper

Nice page. I also collect Canada Provinces and have some of those, but notably not the nice OS1, and only a single of the salmon block.

I have been thinking about starting a Newfoundland collection, since my Canadian collection is getting a bit expensive to complete. I am only interested in VF mint (don't care about gum). What do you think is the best (ie. most cost-efficient) way to begin?

All I can say is that I am glad I got my Newfoundland stamps when I did. I have a few of the better ones but, not that many.

I am always on the lookout for more of them to fill in those empty spaces.

I'm a one trick pony on Newfoundland, and I am happy to share any scans of my collection (about 1500 stamps and 200+covers).

To Terry--yeah, I never thought I'd find the OS1 or be able to afford it--but by chance, I found it at a monthly gathering, and it was used and watermarked. and a deal in my opinion at $150. Note that the salmon block (#233) has one of which is the 233i (known as the "fishhook" variety, because it has a little line or hook coming out of the mouth). often overlooked, this can be valuable. same with the #87 variants at the top.

To Tom--my advice to starting is to buy two or three lots from Eastern or Vance or one of those quality auction houses, and spend like $200 to $500 and get someone's old collection. Then take the time to catalog and sift out the best, creating a best overlap of all three. Then you will have a decent VF collection to then focus on filling in the gaps. This may seem like a lot of work--but it should be more cost efficient, since you will be doing the sifting hard work (and having more fun). the other way of just seeking out individual VF stamps will take a lot more money.

Tommy, that's pretty much what I planned to do. Financially, it seems the best way to do it. I have been looking for a while but have not seen too many collections come up although I imagine some will show themselves sooner or later.

For what it is worth, I happened to see a lot on an auction that closed yesterday of 250 stamps (1868 to 1945) ... estimate of $400 as lot #2345 on Eastern's May 29 auction. Might be unsold (you could check with them), or just a good reference point.

Ok, are the prices for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, & PEI also generally going up? I just got a few of these and they were pretty reasonable.

I am new to this form, and this is my first post. I would like to say THANK YOU ALL. I just started to collect Newfoundland. I try to collect all mint (but can be hinged).

It is very nice to see that people show there stamps,(like above)and always helpful to others.

I would also like to start collecting Nova Scotia. I have noticed that it is hard to collect well centered one's.

It's hard to find most classic stamps well centered, there was a thread here recently on well centered Canadian classics. What is easy to find is a collector who's willing to show their stamps!

Reading what you have to say about prices you are paying, I'd love to sell to you. Sometimes I put Canada stuff up on ebay to sell and I'm lucky to get 15% of catalog.

It's not the lack of interest. There is just too many stamps for sale on ebay so buyers can't see everything that's available.

In a seven day sale, I notice buyers watching items on the 1st day and the last day. I think it's because people search the new items as they are opened for bidding and then they search items where the lots are ending. The other 5 days there is nothing going on.

I've tried myself and there is no way I could look through even a day's worth of lots on ebay for Canada.

I just bought a bunch of Newfoundland, mostly used but some Mint as well. Nothing high-end but probably some interesting stamps there. Maybe you could take a look when I get them.
