Hi!
Ok, I give up......... What are "semi - postal" stamps"

I notice that many world wide countries have them (at least in the first half of the 20th century), but don't recall any for the USA.

Thanks,

Mobilman44

Gee Stallzer, I never thought of asking anywhere else but here...........

Pretty good concept, selling stamps at a premium for a cause. I wonder how successful they were.

Actually the US has issued at least 3 semi postals in recent years. The breast cancer stamp (1998) mentioned in the wiki article as well as The Heros of 2001 stamp with funds going to the families of emergency personnel killed or disabled in the 9/11 attacks and a Stop Family Violence stamp in 2003.

I thought they were stamps that would only get the mail partially delivered.

Thanks all for the info. I confess my attention (stamp wise) is pre 1990s for the USA and pre 1951 worldwide and was just not aware that the US issued any "semi - postals". Since I started this thread, I noticed a number of pre 1950 semi postals had "value + value" imprinted on the stamp. I assume that meant x monies for postage and x monies for the "charity".

Thanks again,
Mobilman44

Here's a commentary that appeared in a 2010 article in USPS's "Beyond the Perf" about US semi-postal stamps and some of the logistics they had to overcome:
