Here's a photo of the extensive damage to the Moore, OK post office following the 05/20/2013 Tornado:

At least there was no loss of life and all postal employees are accounted for. Buildings can be replaced; people can't.

I live about a hundred miles from Moore, but I did see this one:

as it went by my house yesterday. I didn't take that picture, just found a picture of the same storm/tornado as it touched down and caused damage around Ramona, Oklahoma a half hour or so after I saw it.

When that Moore post office was damaged it must have strewn stamps for 200 miles!

My goodness that is a scary photograph! It is amazing that there was not more loss of life.
I have always wondered why there are not more in ground houses built in tornado alley?

The truth is that it is just too unconventional for most tastes. There aren't many hills (everything is too flat) for houses to be built half in/half out of the ground, and if you put an entire house in a hole...well, it just turns into a pond sooner or later. Most houses in this area don't even have basements. Later construction techniques have defeated most of the problems basements used to cause (with our moving ground, etc)...but some of the problems come back in time...it's better just to pass on them.

Sadly, late reports now confirm that a US Postal Service Worker from Oklahoma City was killed in last week's tornado:
