Hey gang, just thought I would post a scan of an interesting cancel I have on Newfoundland #187. Shame it's not more complete but you can clearly make out the big PM, a date in Oct, and St. John's along the bottom. Has anyone seen another cancel like this? Do you think it is a postal cancel or a revenue use or some other type?

Initially I thought it might be a revenue use, but I really have no idea. I bet the inscription along the top would be pretty telling if you could look at a complete strike. Also the size and position of the date bubble relative to the 'PM' initials leads me to believe there could be another letter that we can not see.

Any information would be appreciated!

It looks like a "PAID" date stamp to me. I believe the upside-down triangle at the bottom of the date rectangle is merely decorative; unfortunately, it does make the A look like an M if all you can clearly see is the bottom half. If somebody does have the complete cancel to verify, that would be great. Otherwise, just my guess/opinion.

This stamp was most likely used either on a check (cheque) or on a receipt.
