An interesting read into a question raised by the State of Connecticut that will be particularly interesting to aviation enthusiasts (and aviation topical stamp collectors):

http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/07/trave...light-fight/

Whether or not you agree or disagree with the findings submitted, I found this quote from the article rather interesting, as I didn't know the Smithsonian had an agreement with the Wright Bros. that included this clause:

Quote:
...when the Wright family signed a contract to give the Smithsonian the [Wright] brothers' plane, the museum promised never to declare another aircraft the first to achieve powered flight.

...the family stuck one clause into that contract that said if the Smithsonian ever says anybody flew before the Wright brothers, we have the right to take the airplane back. That clause is in fact still in the contract...

Well...the Wright brothers did give a plane to the Smithsonian...but not "THE" first plane. That plane was taken apart to use the parts in building another plane. That second plane crashed destroying (among other things) the engine (which came from the first plane). The Wright brothers did give one of their first airplanes to the Smithsonian...but it wasn't the original plane (or even the second one for that matter).

No, he did not. North Carolina was "First in Flight" and we put it on our license plates to prove it.

Don't poke the bear!

This argument continues:

Very funny article, with numerous links to the various state proclamations, etc.

I'm certain that Ohio and North Carolina will join, with even Connecticut, in ignoring Mr Pearse.

You asked "Did Gustave Whitehead beat Wright Bros. First Flight"?

What do you mean as the First Flight? Powered or non powered?

stampmaster...I would imagine first flight is powered..If it wasn't powered, it would be a glider.
