I was flipping through a box of stamps at a show yesterday looking for Gagarin stamps and I came across one that I'm not sure about.

This is Gagarin:

And I think this is Gagarin too:
^ Scott 314

There are some obvious differences, like the mouth, but there are a lot more features that I think match exactly. Like Shepard Fairey's Hope image. The Scott catalog only described the dogs, Belka and Strelka.

So do you think that's Gagarin on the Kazakhstan stamp?

I agree this is Gagarin. I have an exhibit that I have shown in the past and noticed very early on that many of the images of him were stylized. At first it concerned me because they did not look authentic. Over the years I have come to believe that he is such a highly regarded hero that artists have wanted to make him even more ethereal.

Thanks Alexey and Redsfan11

I've been working on a spreadsheet of stamps depicting and/or naming Gagarin. Collaboration is welcome.
