Just a quick thought here but any metered postage that was dropped off in bulk or even those little bundles dropped in street pick up boxes (mail boxes -lol) would go through the cancelling machinery. So, I don't think I would necessarily call it a big mystery. In some small towns the banker, store owner, etc..etc....will simply walk the mail over to the local PO while walking to or from the Bank from making the daily Bank deposit. Also, the persons mailing it could have just as easily asked the bank to add it to their outgoing mail?..Like I said it was just a quick thought..
