Anyone Collect St. Pierre And Miquelon?

I'm looking at the stamps of St. Pierre and Miquelon as a new collecting interest. Recently bid on some lots and was surprised at how quickly the bids rose. I've just ordered an SG catalogue and will refrain from bidding until I have learned more. However, does anyone else on the Board collect this Country/Colony and can you suggest why the stamps seem to be so popular? Who is a good supplier of this material?

I have a few covers, as they fall in the Newfoundland sometime. It is a great question, and my guess would be that the popularity is driven by limited supply and unique nature of this tiny ecosystem (a French island, offshore from a British colony, now Canada, in the North Hemisphere?).

Might be similar for somewhere like Isle of Man. Or New Hebrides.

St-Pierre et Miquelon are France's territory

Yes, of course it is part of France--just closely located near Newfoundland (about 20 kilometers according to Google maps)

So, unless I am mistaken many of the covers would have Newfoundland or other province or Canadian cancels.

They are Scott's# 205 CD82 1.25fr carmine lake Mint-$1.90. Used-$1.60
Scott's# 206 CD82 2.25fr ultra Mint-$2.00, Used-$1.60

That is a great cover but I'd have trouble deciding which album to put it in - Newfoundland or St. Pierre (that is, if I ever get enough St. Pierre and Miquelon material to start an album).

Two follow on questions: Does it indicate a value for a cover? And does it provide the first day of issue for these two stamps? I'm curious whether it was a philatelic first day cover of those two stamps. From a Newfoundland perspective, it is a First Flight Cover because the double circle cancel at St Johns on June 27, 1939 was the first flight of this Pan Am clipper from St Johns to New York. And so, I am curious whether Mr Dworetsky of Brooklyn had a friend or family member in St Pierre who created a double FFC/FDC by design. Probably not but any information from the community would be tres chic.

Unfortunately Scott's doesn't have a value for a cover.

The day of issue for these stamps is 10 May, 1939 and are Perf. 12½x12

Looks like I'm a little late to this party - but yes, I branched out from U.S., to Canada, and then to St. Pierre & Miquelon a couple of years ago! I am using a Lindner hingeless album and after adding my 2012 supplement it is up to three binders.

I really enjoy their stamps, because they have not given-in to the modern concept of self-adhesive "stickers" with serpentine die-cuts yet, and 99% of their stamps are water-activated with good ol'e fashioned perforations - and, as an added bonus, they don't scrimp on their printing methods with a large percentage of even their latest stamps being engraved! Those that aren't are usually exquisitely detailed and colorful. There are also the common issues on some of the definitive series which are French designs, but even those are interesting. (In my opinion)

I'm also late to the party. St. P & M. are the sole remnant of the French North American empire; also known as New France. The French lost everything else via the Treaty of Paris in 1763; which ended the French & Indian war, also known as the Seven Years War; with the remainder of the empire being ceded to the British. As an aside, this was was the truly first world war, being fought on multiple continents. St. P. & M. is also noteworthy for being the first French overseas territory to declare for the Free French in World War II.

Several months ago, I created a North America album, within my worldwide, 1840-roughly 1965; Scott International collection. Of course, the primary components are US and territories, Canada & provinces, and Mexico. St. P. & M. is included. My collection of St. P. & M.is modest in size. I hope to add items in the months ahead, primarily through the APS stamp store (real friends don't let friends do stamps on eBay ;-) ).

As another provider, I recommend D & P Stamps in Chula Vista, CA. I have used them primarily for adding to my collection of Portuguese colonies. However, I think they also do French colonials.

The first one has one of SP&M's signature formats: the "triptych design", where there is a three part image that consists of two stamps to the left and right and a non-stamp label in the center. They have issued quite a few of these in the recent years. They all are line engraved. This is my favorite:

The connected triptych is about 145mm wide.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but As far as I know they are a philatelic phenomenon unique to SP&M.
