Here's another philatelic milestone for July 1, 2013 ... it was 166 years ago since the first US Postage Stamps became available for sale:

Quote:
July 1, 1847 --- The first adhesive postage stamps went on sale. Ben Franklin graced the nickel stamp while George Washington was pictured on the ten-cent stamp. The cost of mailing a one-ounce letter was 5 cents. That's more than it cost one hundred years later.

Postage in 1847 was VERY expensive......
If you want to compare the value of a $0.05 Commodity in 1847 there are three choices. In 2012 the relative:
real price of that commodity is $1.44
labor value of that commodity is $12.70(using the unskilled wage) or $22.30(using production worker compensation)
income value of that commodity is $22.00

And just to think what $0.05 buys today ... NOTHING! Not even "penny candy" ... it costs a Quarter or more these days. Even a nickel cost more than a nickel! The US Government pays $0.1009 cents to produce one!
