An unknown number of years ago, someone gave me a stack of 75 glassine envelopes containing some 222 foreign stamps, which I do not collect. So for decades now, they have remained stashed away in their envelopes virtually untouched. My problem is how to identify them, and determine if they are worth the effort to try to sell.

There are notations on the glassines that are both for, I think, categorizing purposes, as well as identification. I have scanned several of the glassines with the stamps in them and the markings on the envelopes for your consideration.

Are those Scott numbers for the countries stamped on these glassines?

What period of history do they come from? (I'm guessing 1950's and/or 1960's.)

Is there a way I can verify the identification and current price of 222 stamps from 12 different countries without spending a fortune?...Online sources possibly?... The prices listed on the envelopes are from God knows when. With the current prices, is it even worth the effort?

Here are the countries and the number of stamps each:
Chile- 34
Cuba- 14
Brazil- 11
Dominican Republic- 32
Honduras- 10
Ecuador- 3
Mexico- 2
Costa Rica- 3
Bolivia- 31
Columbia- 39
Nicaragua- 20
Argentina- 23

Can anyone identify this one?

Thanks for any help!

Looks like all Scott numbers, the red Chile Loco is #283, and the purple Loco is #C172. Stamps that were retail at 10 cents each 35 years ago are probably worth 12 cents today.

I agree with fredcdobbs.

If you are in the U.S. and anywhere near a good-sized library, they should have a set of Scott catalogues.

If you really wanted to know current catalogue values, you could make a list of the countries in alphabetical order, list the Scott numbers and check them all in just a few minutes. Frankly, I'd probably just bring the box along and forget about making a list.

Probably not truly worth your time, from a return-on-your-investment point of view, but at least you'll know what you have.

They are all from Latin America after 1940- so at least a collectible grouping.

If you are not interested in them yourself, then selling them as a group (ebay? Stamp Club?) might interest some collectors. Probably not worth a lot of your time, except to catalogue them if you are compulsive about it. Even then...

Those packets look like approvals mailed out by a stamp company or from a inventory some of the major department stores had back in the 1950's or 60's .

You could also look at ebay, searching for country names and topic or theme to find a price, albeit priced to sell and sometimes to different audiences.

Otherwise, it would be the
Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue.

Searching ebay for older ones you can find many by just searching for 'scott catalogue'.

I went to the library today and swan dived into the volumes of the Scott WW Catalogs. The gem of the lot was Bolivia Scott #C139 which came in at $2.75.
