Canadian Slogan Cancellations

Hi All

I won a lot of 100 different covers, all with slogan cancellations. I haven't sorted through them yet but thought I would scan a few for the forum to give you an idea what they are like.

I figure it is a win win situation. If I already have the slogan, I can keep the cover for my modern advertising cover collection

Some of those slogans have multiple design varieties, too, such as the "Observe Sunday" slogan, wherein you scanned two different versions of it.

When the majority of the slogan cancellations had to be issued in both of the official languages, this in turn created varieties of some of the slogans. There weren't too many variations when they could be issued in English only. The same can be stated for those few slogans that have appeared in French only as well.

Lately, I've been more focused on Slogan Cancels, because to me it an area sort of overlooked and a good topic to deep dive into. My hypothesis is that a lot of us who collect covers miss these completely in our own collections--short of time, we tend to focus on the stamp and classify it.

I don't know Canada slogan cancels, but the Newfoundland Specialized Catalog has a great definitive section on Newfie slogans, including date used and some rarities/imperfections. even estimates on value - just for the slogan ! Who knows if the value holds, but I like it and use it as a guide.

For example, I recently found a cover at a stamp show, listed for $1 because the stamp was a common one. I happened to be armed with the knowledge of the slogans, had my book handy, whipped it out and found that it had a very uncommon slogan used during WWI and the value listed was like $90. Again, who knows but I certainly felt good about paying $1.

of course, I have never met a newfoundland cover that I didn't like. I will try to post the image tonight but I might have floated the stamp off and thrown the envelope in the trash...hmh...need to check on that...

i'd love to hear from the canadian's on whether there is a like resource of objective data on canadian slogan cancels.

I have to two standard references on Canadian slogan cancellations by David Proulx and the more current one by Coutts.

I have been collecting the slogans for about 15 years and have amassed a few hundred of them in all.

Regarding the Newfoundland ones, they are also listed in the references I noted above. As well as those references, I also have a 1998 edition of the Walsh & Butt Newfoundland Specialized Catalogue that I refer to every now and then as well.

I will continue to look for more slogan cancellations as time permits.

One of my specialties are the slogan cancellations for the Muskoka Hospital For Consumptives types. I have listed them in my website at www.waome.ca in case you might be interested?

"Coutts slogan catalogue" I guess, when you care enough to ensure you use the best possible slogan?

And ... slogans were used to promote health.
