Quote: What is meant by "cleaning"? By Cleaning, I mean trying different chemicals, and or solutions. Adding a cleanser like liquid detergent, testing water mark fluids, or testing things like pure citrus to see if the stamps get damaged, bleed, bleach out or worst, disintegrate. |

Ohhhh I get it. I'm afraid the kiloware I was referring to didn't have many stamps you would call "dirty". Rather, obliterated by cancels. But I wish I could help. I understand what you are trying to do and wish I knew how to do it. I typed "cleaning" in the search engine and found quite a few topics on the subject I think I will browse thru. If you find a formula that doesn't alter the ink, I'd be interested (so might others) in knowing what it is. I have caused this topic to de-rail, so I best shut up now.

IBFS, I would gladly accept some of your kiloware. I dont mind heavy cancels if it means completing a page in my album. I'll email you my address in case you want to send some along. Today I was trying to use peroxide on a color stain of modern PSA mallard duck, so far no success. I will be trying a light dilution of household bleach on a stamp with mold on it later. |

Today is the day of the stamp auction for the 150 packets of Dennison stamp hinges plus the 48 packets of Fold-O-Hinges ,also included is 79 bags of Harris Easy Mount hinges .It is a interesting lot up for public auction ,never seen a stamp auction lot that was just hinges ,seen many where it was stamp supplies with hinges included . The latest news is the firm has two high bidders at $1150.00 and that will be the opening bid .My guess ,which I posted here is that its going much higher, first it will go to a price where the profit margin is too thin for a ebay sellers but the quanity is too much for a collector .As I posted earlier it will go to someone who is going to speculate on the future price of stamp hinges and the lot could reach $1800.00 to somewhere high is my guess ........today is the day . |

just for the record the stamp hinge lot went for $1350.00 plus 15% so the buyer paid 1502.50 for the lot . |

So the buyer paid $1502.50 for 150 packets of Dennison stamp hinges plus the 48 packets of Fold-O-Hinges and 79 bags of Harris Easy Mount hinges. That's a combined total of 277 packages of hinges.
Just a little quick math suggests that for 277 packets of hinges, the buyer paid just under $5.43 per package of hinges. Each packet of hinges probably contains between 300-1000 hinges, so I'll use 500 hinges per package as an average (277 * 500 = 138,500 hinges) which comes out to be $0.010 (about a penny a hinge). In fact, if you want to be really frugal and cut each hinge in half, you'd double the number of hinges to 277,000, which then brings the cost per hinge down to $0.005 (about a half penny a hinge).
Considering that stamp mounts can cost upwards of between $0.05 and $0.10 per mount (depending on size, shape, whether they are pre-cut or you cut them yourself), plus shipping, for 138,500 mounts, you'd pay something in the neighborhood of $7,000 to $14,000 for an equal number of stamp mounts.
All of a sudden the price for those hinges doesn't sound all that outrageous by comparison. |

wt1-------your math loses me . The buy paid roughly $7.00 a packet for Dennison Hinges and about $4.00 for the Harris and Fold-o-Hinges which means ,he is playing with slim profit margins if he is going to resell them on E-bay .The huge quantity is a too much for a collector so my guess is its a reseller . |

on the subject of mounts ,am I the only lost soul in the philatelic community that reuses mounts from all the collections I buy ,because I never purchased new mounts but do find sealed packets unused in some of the bulk lots that I win at auction . |

Quote: wt1-------your math loses me . For the sake of simplicity, I was applying the same value to all of the stamp hinges, regardless of brand. Actually if the details of the sale defines the value of each lot (Dennison, Harris and Fold-o-Hinges), then he did grossly overpay for the latter ones. For example, I recently purchased some Fold-o-Hinges for $1.95 per package of 1000, which is less than half the cost the buyer paid as part of the above lot. Likewise, you can still buy Harris hinges, which are currently available at a retail price of $3.49 per package of 1000 at this link: https://www.whitman.com/store/Inven...Pack-of-1000 |

I reuse mounts all the time. My favorite tactic for buying pages with mounted stamps is to slice the glued end of the mount with the stamp in it, flip the stamp over and remount the stamp in my album. |

Hi! My USA collection in Scott's Nationals is mostly mint, and all stamps are in Scott's mounts. On the other hand, my world collection (1840-1950s)is about 40 percent mint, mounted in Scott's Big Blue albums, and all with Dennison hinges (from ebay). Have to say, this is one decision I made early on that I am still totally happy with. |
