Hi,
Many times on this Forum we have discussed hinges, and usually the result is that Dennison hinges of old are the best way to go.

Over the last year I've picked up a number of packages off ebay, and of course am very happy with them.

Recently I picked up a number of Scott album pages with stamps, and have been removing them over the last two days. The hinges peel off the stamps perfectly (not so much the pages), and they appear to be different from others I have seen. These are not your typical Dennisons, which are (from my experience) rectangle shaped.

These have rounded corners, a bit smaller than the Dennisons, and have a faint greenish tint. Any idea what these are? Maybe they are Dennisons from before the 1950s, or ???

Thanks,
Mobilman44

could be FOLD-O-HINGES ,which I have been using for years with satisfactory results .Just moisten them lightly and they peel just fine .

It could be anything. I would re-read the article on stamp hinges at this link that illustrates a number of stamp hinge varieties that were made over the years. In fact, page two makes reference to a "turquoise" stamp hinge made by Western Stamp Company that was of a copycat design, if that may be a possibility (?):

Another possibility is that depending on where your Scott albums originated from, there were a number of stamp hinge manufacturers that did not sell their products in the US, so maybe the hinges would have originated in Europe or elsewhere?

Thanks!
To the best of my knowledge, the originator of these Scott pages (1940-1949)lived in California and put the album together in the 50s/60s.

Early Dennison's had rounded corners, especially the non-folded kind. They had a greenish tint. I'm told that Dennisons occasionally came in different sizes and that it may not have been intentional on Dennison's part. Treat sold some that were slightly smaller, were green, and were made by the Dennison company. I don't know if they ever had round corners.

My money is on Dennison or something that was made for another company by Dennison.

Yes, they probably are some form of early Dennisons. They are obviously prefolded and about 75 percent the size of regular Dennisons, similar color, and of course the rounded corners. In fact, when opened up and laid flat, they almost look like an oval with flat long sides.

Of course my main reason for the query is that I was wondering if there was another brand out there that would substitute for the hard to get and somewhat pricey Dennisons I get off ebay.

The best substitute for Dennison hinges were Fold-o-Hinges made by Harold Cohn of Chicago. Not as good as Dennison's but a second best. However, when Mr. Cohn died and his son took over the business, the product apparently suffered and the firm eventually folded. They can be found on ebay, though, at a price point somewhat lower than the classic Dennison's. Here's one example:

There are some Hygrade hinges that were made by Dennison (or appear to have been made by them). If you an find any "Treat" hinges they may have been made by Dennison also. Either of them are cheaper than the actual Dennison brand. Word of warning: All Hygrade or Treat hinges may not be the same as other ones...and an ebay seller may or may not know the difference.

I have been using Treat, Hygrade, and Dennison for the past year or so, and they seem to be interchangeable (at least the ones I have).

It has been a long time, but I have used Fold-o-Hinges in the past and they seemed to be very good too. So, I second WT1's opinion on those.

Here are a couple examples of old hinge packets that I've picked up with various collections.
