To the larger community, I've been offered to buy these two Newfoundland stamps and I would appreciate any and all of your opinions on their condition...Good or Fine or F-VF or the like.

A dealer who has them had a different opinion than mine. He offered a sum based on them higher than what I believed and I might counter offer him but thought the SCF insights would be helpful.

I've used Unitrade's guidance on Condition...and Grading.

This is #2 from Newfoundland (F catalog is $5,000 used, as point of reference only).

Also, #13 (F catalog is $2,500), mint.

Sorry the pics are not better, I used my iphone...but should be enough to see the margins etc....

many thanks

The first, the used one, does not qualify as 'Fine' in my opinion. Average at best. The margin on the left side is cutting into the design of the stamp.

The second, the mint one, I would say is F-VF. Even though the margin on the right is small, it is still there.

Watch for repairs of the edges/margins!

Thanks Classical.

I'm in agreement on the second mint one that it is F-VF.

On the first one, my gut feeling was the same as yours--that since the design is impacted, it is not Fine. However, my read of the Unitrade catalog which has a paragraph on this, seems to lead one to a Fine determination because for imperforates with three solid sides, it meets the definition. anyone else?

These stamps are sometimes faked from proofs when there is enough value difference, I would want a cert for sure on these.
