Inventors On Stamps

This January 12, 1984 stamp (Mi #1198) of the Federal Republic of Germany commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of scientist and inventor Philipp Reis (1834-74). Reis invented the telephone in 1860. The device is shown on the stamp.

In 1876, American Alexander Graham Bell invented and patented the first practical telephone.

Trevor Lloyd Wadley (1920-1981) was a South African electrical engineer who invented tellurometer, a land surveying device, in 1954. A stamp issued by South Africa in 1979 depicts his portrait and his invention.

Here are two stamps depicting German electrical engineer, inventor and industrialist Werner von Siemens. The first is Berlin Mi 397, issued October 12, 1952, and the second is Federal Republic of Germany Mi. #528, issued on December 13, 1966.

Siemens's first invention was the electrically-charged sea mine. Over his lifetime, he invented many more devices, and made improvements to the inventions of others. Siemens held six U.S. patents.

Here from Czechoslovakia is a 1957 issue commemorating Karel Klí#269; (1841-1926) who built on the work of Henry Fox Talbot to create the modern photogravure process in the 1870's. Klí#269; is on the left.

The right hand stamp honoring Ressel, inventor of the ship screw, was already shown on p. 5 in this thread by Nethryk, but the image is one of those blurred-out Photobucket ones so I left it in the scan. The two were together as Sc. 816 and 817.

On March 12, 1981 Ireland issued a set of four "Science and Technology" stamps (Hibernian #s C304-7) depicting Irish inventors. They are:

Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838 – 1917) was a German general and later inventor of the Zeppelin rigid airships. He tested his first airship LZ1 on July 2, 1900. Paraguay issued a stamp in 1988 to celebrate his 150th birthday.

Ottmar Mergenthaler (1854 – 1899) was a German-American inventor who created the linotype machine, the first device that could easily and quickly set complete lines of type for use in printing presses. He is honored in a US Pioneers of Communication stamp issued in 1996.

Zénobe Gramme (1826–1901) was a Belgian electrical engineer. He invented the Gramme machine, a type of direct current dynamo capable of generating smoother and much higher voltages than the dynamos known to that point. The 2001 commemorative stamp shows metal coil used in his device.

This July 11, 1998 stamp of India commemorates the centenary of Godrej Brothers, which is now Godrej Group, an international conglomerate. The entrepreneurial brothers Ardeshir (1868-1926) and Pirojsha (1882-1972) Godrej are depicted on the stamp (SC #1696).

Ardeshir Godrej, pictured on the left, was more the inventor of the two brothers. His first patented device was a lock claiming "unpick ability." He also patented the world's first springless lock. Also, Adeshir Godrej developed a fireproof safe and a vegetable oil-based soap.

Traian Vuia (1872-1950) was a Romanian inventor and aviation pioneer who designed, built and tested the first tractor monoplane. His March 18, 1906 flight was featured in a minisheet issued by Posta Romana in 2006.

Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (1765–1833) was a French inventor, usually credited as the inventor of photography and a pioneer in that field. A stamp issued by Mauritius in 2018 shows his View from the Window at Le Gras, a heliographic image and the oldest surviving camera photograph (c. 1826).

Cornelis Drebbel (1572 – 1633) was a Dutch engineer and inventor. He was the builder of the first navigable submarine in 1620 which is featured in this 2020 North Macedonia stamp.

Jouffray D'Abbans (1751-1832) was a French engineer. He is the inventor of the first paddle steamer Pyroscaphe in 1783. A stamp issued by La Poste in 2016 depicts his steamer sailing on the Saône.

This stamp remember the peruvian diplomat Pedro Paulet (1874-1945), who claimed to be the first person to build a liquid-propellant rocket engine and modern rocket propulsion system.

Paulet's claims were unknown prior to October 27, 1927, when the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio published a letter he wrote, in which he claimed to have conceived a "rocket airplane project" 30 years prior. Had Paulet's claims been authenticated, he might today be considered the father of liquid-propellant rocketry, rather than Robert H. Goddard, who in 1926, flew a liquid-fueled rocket engine in a test vehicle.

Jozef Murgaš (1864-1929) was a Slovak inventor, architect, and Roman Catholic priest. He contributed to wireless telegraphy and helped in the development of mobile communications. A Slovakia 1994 stamp shows his portrait with his wireless telegraph patented in 1904.
