I'm not sure if this should be posted here or in the "US Cover" section.

I've have been trying to find a list of all the post office branches and substations in 1938.

One of the collections I'm working on is National Air Mail Week covers (May 15-21, 1938) for California.

So far I have 309 different postmarks, However it seems I'm always finding new ones.

Does anybody know where I might find such a list? Or if there is such a thing?

Thanks

Hello!
Try this link from the Aerodacious website. You can select each state as needed.

I did a search and this is the closest I could find to answering my question on the forums, but I have still not found what I am looking for.

The stamp posted below, has a Montrose Heights Station mark on it. Doing a google search, I found a Montrose Heights Station in Henrico, VA.

My question is, why can I not find it on the USPS list of post offices, nor on the links in this thread? I cannot find it under Henrico, nor Montrose Heights Station. According to a link, from the google search, there is a post office in Henrico, VA. Comments about it are as late as a year ago.

There is, however, no information about it. Reason I am asking is because I am trying to keep track of the post offices I have postmarks for, so I know when I find one that is closed. I list the opening date of them, and note if they're still open as of this year.

There is nothing, however, about this station. Can someone enlighten me as to why there is a post office that the USPS site does not list? Is it a substation? Does the USPS site not list those?

I think perhaps a little reading about post offices, not just stamps, is in order, for my future.

Thank you for helping answer this question.

You need to look a little harder ... sometimes the USPS search function misses some locations and you have to search for it through the "back door":

https://tools.usps.com/go/POLocator...ddress=23231

I don't know that much about the region, but the USPS Postal Bulletin of 03/08/1962 showed Montrose Heights as a "classified station" under Richmond. It also notes that it was established as an "independent city" on 10/18/1958.

A historical note:

Quote:
The area was named by Thomas Farrand in memory of his friend and fellow church elder John Hunter whose home in Scotland was called Montrose Heights.

If you do a search on the USPS.com using the FIND USPS LOCATIONS, you will find Montrose Heights. It may actually be a full fledged post office now and NOT a postal station because the ZIP CODE® ends in -9998 which is a signal that a postmaster is at the location. Most stations have ZIP CODEs® that don't end in -9998.

A few years ago I searched the USPS site using the FIND USPS LOCATIONS and was able to find about 100 postal stations in NYS (outside of NYC).

You should contact the Postmark Collectors Club. It issues Directories of each station with post office and postal station, contract post offices and other such units. Their lists are much better than the USPS's. Their website is http://www.postmarks.org

Thank you to you both, wt1 and Glenn.

I was using the list from the google search result that showed 'USPS - Post Offices by State'. It is a webpmt usps dot gov link, not dot com, and shows all the post offices for a state, with open and, if closed, the date it was closed. It does not give any other information.

I appreciate the help, history, and links. Will look into the Postmark Collectors Club most definately.

Have you tried Jim Forte's Untied States Post Officies, a list of over 187,000 officies? He does say that the Virginia listings are "below par".
