As as student of history the little known facts are the cool ones. I knew this one even as not being a stamp collector. It was in a political science class when they were covering agendas promoted by governmental leaders. FDR ranked pretty high. However I will note that every leader was doing this during the 30's.

This stamp is listed as the most obvious example of American political and civic agendas by a political leader.

Other presidents use the PO but not as bold and blatantly as FDR did.

Most people don't know it but the Champion of Liberty Series was put out by the Eisenhower administration during the height of the cold war. It was an attempt by the administration to carry the message of freedom around the world during the cold war. You may notice that the #1095 Magsaysay stamp was the largest postage stamp ever issued up to that time.

With a denomination of 8 cents it was intended for use on international mail to spread the world.

Consider this comment about the N.R.A. Stamp, too:

Quote:
One of the earliest stamps issued during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 3¢ N.R.A. commemorative of August, 1933, which was planned to arouse the support and interest of the general public in the National Industrial Recovery Act. The stamp had to be prepared and issued in record-breaking time in order to have the desired impact upon the public. When the stamp was issued mint copies and a first day cover were sent to the President by his Postmaster General, James A. Farley. He was very pleased with the design but teased his PMG that the farmer looked like himself (FDR), that the business man looked like Grover T. Whalen, and the blacksmith like Lionel Barrymore. The girl, he thought, was wearing a No. 11 shoe and a bustle. However, he admitted he considered it a fine stamp and congratulated Mr. Farley.

John no olive branch needed as I was not offended by anything in this thread. Its just conversation on a subject that I thought any seasoned collector of US stamps knew about. However I was wrong as people still don't want to believe it. No big deal.

I have about 20 years of putting together what I consider a great reference of classic cancels. It does differ in some areas from what was put out by people with a financial interest in what they came up with. I'm not ready to share because some of it needs some more sources for proof of my interpretations. Once I get the sources of proof I need it will be ready to go. However getting these source has been time consuming and a challenge.

It has been fun though and I have been privileged to see some great stamps held by some better and more knowledgeable people than myself. I think it will take a few more years to get it all done. It will have what I consider a very informative part of manuscript cancellations.

Sloane's Column was an important resource in it's day. All of the columns have been collected in one volume, called...wait for it....."Sloane's Column". Well worth hunting out for those interested in valuable historical research and opinions on US stamps during a 1350 week period of the 30's-50's. APS Hall Of Fame member.

In the original poster, some artistic license has been taken showing FDR walking. I do not think that in 1933 he could walk. He could with difficulty stand while wearing the leg braces.

Yes FDR was afflicted with crippling polio in 1921 while on vacation in Canada. NRA stamp creation is a cool fact of history !
