I'm usually late to receive these mailings, but I just found this USA Philatelic Holiday Edition 2013 in today's mail.

A nice cover, too!

Agreed. But when you think about all of the dark background stamps recently, it seems to me it makes it hard on the post office to appropriately cancel them because of the dark background being used. Recently, we've had the Johnny Cash stamp, the Gingerbread Houses, and, of course, the upcoming Medal of Honor stamps. Even in 2012, we had the Miles Davis/Edith Piaf stamps with a black background. I guess artistic license wins out over the ease of postmarking the stamps these days.

I noticed the holiday edition doesn't have any of the definitive stamps listed.

The "Holiday Edition" also doesn't allow you to buy less than full panes of some stamps. If you go back to the Medal of Honor cover (Quarter 4, 2013) there is much more detail. But then again, stamp collectors aren't really the intended audience for the "Holiday Edition" ... it's supposed to be for gift giving use.

By the way, did anyone notice a glowing illustration error contained in the "Holiday Edition"? Go to the top of page 22. Item D (1861 Civil War Stamps) use an image showing them as 44-cent denominated stamps when in fact the stamps were never issued that way ... they were issued as "Forever" stamps (Scott 4522 and 4523)!
