Hello filipo,

I'm not at all sure on the first, but the second I would guess the late 1830's to early 1840's as I have a few from that era with the same color and marks which were addressed during that time. By the way, a nice ohio related cover.

Sirrus

Hello Sirrus. Thank you. It looks that the 2nd has a handstamped duty ("PAID" + handwritten note in pencil). Very obscure, but, probably usual for that early usage. I will try to reveal the postmark on the first cover.

If it's of any help, as it relates to the second cover addressed to a Samuel Creaghead, Cincinnati, Ohio, I note that the US Census lists him and his family in 1860 as residing in Covington, KY (very near Cincinnati) and his occupation listed as "real estate agent". Samuel (age 40), and his wife, Sue (age 30) had three children. (It's possible his residence could have been in Covington, KY and his business office in Cincinnati, OH).

In fact, Samuel Creaghead died on July 11, 1883 and is buried in Covington. His gravestone suggests he lived from 1820-1883:

The covers date between July 1, 1851, when the rate to mail a paid letter dropped from 5c to 3c, and Jan. 1, 1856, when the use of postage stamps to show prepayment of the rate became mandatory.

Chipg, really great information. I went and found one similar to this one and it did have five cents instead of three. I'm still in the beginning stages of learning.
