Looking at E-BAY today and noticed a packet of 1,000 Dennison un-folded stamp hinges sold for $40.00 plus $1.00 for shipping -----WHAT !--------there was 18 bids to run it up to that price .

We had a couple stop at our club table with a childhood stamp collection at our last stamp show. I said that the stamps were pretty much worthless, but that packet of Dennison Hinges was worth something! |

Pretty bad when the hinges are worth more than the stamps. Might as well just display a bunch of packets of those in an album. Me, I just go to the local hobby shop and and buy whatever is there that's cheap. I don't use them that much so 2 packs of cheapies will last, probably, the rest of my life. |

It's because they are all Mint Original Gum - Never Stamped. Idiots pay any amount of money for that kind of thing because 'experts' keep telling them that's tho only way for investment. |

I'll admit to paying $10 for an unopened pack of dennison's. For me, it's worth it. The stamps stay where you put them, yet you can easily remove the stamp and hinge for any reason.
$40 is crazy since there are usually buy it now prices around $15 or 20. |

I was just at a local stamp auction, and someone had put up 2 of those 1000 packets for sale. The asking price was $30 for both, and the owner wouldn't budge. No bides, but most of the discussion was about the color of the hinge ... probably to determine whether they were newer or older. (I think we determined that they were green hinges.) I, myself, haven't used a stamp hinge in years. |

I've paid about $10-12 a pack for Dennison Hinges. It is worth the price if you ever need to move stamps to another album. I cut them in half when I begin to run short. |

I had used mounts but was always unsure about them and had never really liked looking at my stamps through a layer of plastic. So for the last year I have been using Dennison's hinges which I have been buying for around $10 to $12 a packet of 1000. The only slight problem I have found is that not all US sellers will ship to the Uk and some that do apply unreasonable shipping charges. There are till enough US sellers that do ship to the UK at reasonable cost to make it worth seeking them out.
I read recently that it was most likely the sales promotions for the (then) newly produced stamp mounts that fuelled the feeding frenzy for MNH stamps, and drove prices for them skyward. I now collect MLH and clear cancelled used stamps so see no practical advantage to using mounts. And I much prefer the appearance of my album pages.

Hi, What happened on ebay was a good old fashioned bidding war. It was about winning, not the item. Over the last two years I've picked up 10-11 envelopes of Dennisons off of ebay. The low was $10.50 and the high was $16. Also, as a seller you usually want your auctions to end on the weekend (bigger audience), but as a buyer, I've found those ending at odd hours and during the week are often the best buys. |

At first I was thinking maybe a bit of shill bidding was going on. Then after checking sold listings I see that the average price now for a pack is $20 with $15 being deal. The average last year when I checked prices was about $10 with about $7 for a deal. That being said I guess we should have bought up those 25 cent packs and collected them instead of stamps! |

Hi, Over the last two years I have bought an awful lot of stamps/albums off ebay, and now am selling albums (two a week). Anyway, I've monitored availability/prices out there for the last 18 months. Its very obvious that collections/albums have significantly heavier "traffic" in November - March as opposed to the rest of the year. In fact, the volume of album auctions has almost doubled this month, as compared to October or previous months back to spring. Of course there is a seasonality to the Hobby, particularly with our northern climate folks. |

I got mine for $9.99 at the end of September, but I got lucky and was the only bidder. I also picked up some "vintage" Fold-O-Hinges for about $4.50 each. The packs I got seem to work just as well as Dennison's. Time will tell. edit: Mobilman - yes, summer stamp sales were dead. Less buyers and sellers. ebay / PayPal fees put off some sellers, so I was happy to see things pick up again recently. |

I have a couple of packages of Dennison hinges. Don't use hinges anymore but think I will keep them. Probably a better investment than most stocks. |
