The 1-volume WW Scott was still available as late as 1971!?! That's thicker than a phone book. My 1940 1-volume WW edition is close to 1500 pages.

I know Scott went to 3 WW volumes in 1972. I thought Scott stopped making the unabridged 1-volume WW editions in the late 1940s and stopped the abridged 1-volume WW editions in the early 1950s.

According to a seller on abebooks.com, the 1971 combined edition is

Quote:
955 pages + 1546 pages + indices bound together.

I don't have one to verify that, but it sounds about right. Can't imagine how the bindings stand up to much use.

Wow. Thanks for looking that up. I can't even fathom why anyone would want one giant volume like that. How would you use it -- I imagine reading the inside columns is an adventure because the large bend of the bulk pages makes it nearly impossible to have the pages flat. How in the world did Scott make money selling such a large single volume? I mean, the demand couldn't have been that high.
