This is one of a few penny reds I have and wonder if someone could give me some information on it and a value.
Many thanks.

Hello sheencrofter, welcome to Stamp Community.

Whatever the price catalogue-wise turns out to be, I think the ' A - A ' plate p[osition and the < 2 > obliteration (two A's also!) will probably help to increase the value when potential buyers and shown that feature.

What you have is an imperforate 1841 1d red SG#8 and one of 2.5 billion printed in imperforated format.
Stanley Gibbons Catalog value is around £25 UK in near perfect condition. Your stamp is cut into or damaged so may be worth £2 even with the letters AA.

I don't know much about Penny Reds (I have a couple), but that is quite the answer from scotzm. On behalf of all forum constituents, and to all of those experts out there who help those of us in need, thanks for the preciseness, knowledge and being willing to take part.

On another Penny Red note, I planned to use the Penny Red Plate 77 as the rarity in my next book, though I don't know much about them. Supposedly, there are nine Plate 77's in existence (could be more if there truly are nine). But I saw an article from a few years ago that implies ALL Plate 77s are fakes.

What do others say?

What year was Plate 77 created? I know in the 1860s, but an exact year would be very helpful to me.

Thanks.

The infamous Plate 77 was rejected and no stamps from that plate were ever officially issued. As such, there is no official Registration Date of the plate, nor Put to Press date. Plates #76//#81 were registered on 7Feb1863 and put to press on 1Mar1864.

Please note, the Penny Red mentioned by centerstage98 in regards to Plate 77 is NOT the same issue as the penny red of the OP (sheencrofter).

Assuming they are all genuine, it is generally assumed that they all came from one or more test sheets that were supposed to be destroyed but was somehow mistakenly sold to the the public. So yeah, technically if even one is genuine, there may be more out there.

Of the nine, four are mint and five are used. Two of the mint stamps are "lost" somewhere. Technically, there is a 10th stamp (mint) that was destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

A couple of years ago, there was much buzz about a "discovered" strip of 3 on cover that initially received a certificate from an established British expertizing group despite a lot of protests/challenges from others (the finder of the cover is a well-known forger!). I never followed up on subsequent news, but assumed from lack of continued fan-fare that perhaps the cover has since then been discredited. I think I lost my download of the cover when my laptop crashed 2 years ago.

If anyone wants to continue the discussion of Plate 77, I would suggest opening a new thread, since it is a different stamp from the OP.

Sorry to move us off the topic at hand - that being OP's Penny Red, which, despite being a non-rarity is kind of fun with its A A markings.

Sheencrofter's stamp is SG#8 whereas any 1d Red plate 77 (no dates given but logically it must have been put to press 1864), apart from being worth an estimated £600,000, would be SG#43, have letters in all four corners, be perforated, and have the plate number in the design.
The strip of three plate 77 on cover HAS been certified genuine recently, by the way.
