A general topic, and hopefully not too fully off base in regard to collecting...and Yes, it gets me one more post to satisfy the fairly hefty participation requirements! Since I have many days of "use or lose" leave approaching and since the Smithsonian and downtown DC are only a train ride away for me, is the Postal Museum a worthy day trip? Any particular can't miss exhibits there that anyone can recommend? Lastly, if any forum members are from DC, are there any brick and mortar dealers left in the city worth a visit? Thanks for any info. I figure it may make for an interesting day trip, just have to convince my wife of that also. John
John, I use to live in Maryland outside of DC. There's no stamp stores in the DC area itself. There was one on K street, but he was shot and killed back in the 1980's. The closest stamp stores are in Bethesda (Maryland Stamps and Coins and Rockville (Universal Stamps) if the latter is still in business. The Postal Museum is nice and it does have a nice gift shop to buy some supplies as well as USPS clerks to buy new issues.
If you have the time and make an appointment in advance, they will put you in a room and bring parts of the museum collection for you to view. I am not sure how long in advance you must do this however.
Thanks for the replies, I will be giving it a tour this Saturday. I may stop in at Maryland Stamp also as they seem to be a relatively large outfit, though I recently ordered some Hawid mounts from them online and it took a second contact two weeks later before they acted upon my order. I'll chuck it up to "falling through the cracks". John
