An Australia 2013 release commemorating the Light Horse battle in WWI at Beersheba. A joint issue with Israel but at the time of this battle it was Palestine country and it was not unnoticed by the Palestinians.

The Light Horse Soldier's horses were in desert country with no water left and there horses were not going to last more than one more day with out water. The only water to be had was at a heavily fortified by the Germans water well at Beersheba. The Light Horse forces were in an impossible situation in all ways so they charged on horse at full gallop into overwhelming enemy fire. But the Germans ran for there lives. It was said that they could see something else riding with the Light Horse that day and they won an impossible battle.

What Germans ? They were Ottoman (Turkish)soldiers.
Where did you get this totally wrong info.
The Ottoman Army was modernized by German advisors but sent
no troops.

However you want to interpret this Light Horse Battle is one thing; the German generals were early on getting the credit for blasting the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. I think the stamps are the important thing here. I think they are beautiful, and my grandfather would have been very proud.
In World War I he served in the Cavalry in the Dutch Army. But he never saw any horses, or so he told me. Her was the mechanic for a company of......bicycle soldiers!

The Netherlands were neutral in World War I therefore did not
take part in the Great War.

Thank you, sir! But even though Holland was neutral, the troops were on high alert. From 1914 to 1917 ( During WWI ) my grandpa had to serve!
And I still think the stamps are beautiful!

When I was growing up I had the honour and privelege of meeting one of the original light horsemen who was involved in this battle - he was one of natures gentlemen and the thing I remember the most was the tears in his eyes when talking about his horse - we (future generations) should never forget the sacrifices made by all who served in WWI and other wars - as a fellow poster says "stamps are the important thing here" and what they represent - LEST WE FORGET

Much to my privilege I was talking to a 91 year old man 2 weeks ago at the end of my street that was in the WWII and he told me the story I wrote.

He and his soldier friends stopped at monument at Beersheba on there journey from Europe area to fight in the islands above Australia and was in Bombay at the time Singapore was taken by the Japanese.

Like most of my information about Australia at war it comes from talking to people that were there. Sometimes I get it wrong. Surly you can forgive me for that!

Two of my passions in life have been stamp collecting and history.

There are many ways to interpret historical facts but there is only one truth. But how does one find the real truth.
As for WWI and WWII I have read dozens, no hundreds of books,
talked to veterans on both sides and spoken to my relatives who
served in both World Wars and I still have many questions.

I wonder has there been on SCF a thread about Historical errors/lies/
portrayed on stamps?

One more thing about this stamp about the battle of Beersheba.
Why were these stamps issued in 2013 when the battle took place in 1917 ?
Stamp anniversaries are usually issued at 50,100,150,200 etc intervals, not after 96 years.
Is this usually the case with Australian stamps and if not, tehn why these particular ones?

Australia 2013 celebrated 100th 1st Australian stamp.

There was a stamp Expo held in Melbourne Australia.

Because of this Australia Post released some issues and time with the Expo.

Australia Post knows how strongly the Australian people respect our Diggers. It looks like Australia Post wanted to do something very special for the WWI by highlighting Beersheba.

The stamp release for the 100 year celebrations

I wonder if Australia Post had this as release ready for issue in 1917?

I wonder if Australia is going to make this issue continue to be added to as the WWI 100 years roll on?

The image of stamps.

An Australia 2013 release commemorating the Light Horse battle in WWI at Beersheba. Good time to refresh the stamps image.

Talking at myths in war,
Probably the greatest myth of all is the so called "Angels of Mons" story from WWI
It is interesting how stories get started. (My family had relations fighting on both sides during WWI & II, so the tales you hear are interesting.)

The renowned Count Von Lucknow,( a close friend of the family,) who escaped from New Zealand internment during WWI is an interesting story, and if you believe the stories, it was with the collaboration of the NZ Government, ( story which I am inclined to believe, as he let my relations know the day and time and how) Every one liked him.
Horamakhet.
