My first post -- (be gentle with me). I collect antique maps on stamps, etc. I would like to know how to display them as a theme or tell a story (not for exhibiting). Right now they are displayed on my pages according to geography (the Americas, Europe, Malaysia and Australia, Europe, etc. I collect the stamps, covers, FDCs, etc.

For each stamp I include the map name and its date and the cartographer above the issue and any pertinent notes below the issue. I don't want it to be cartographic or philatelic, just a nice display.

For example: Amazon River ~ 1562
Diego Gutierrez
(Stamp)
Note the meandering representation
of the river, which was common at the time.
Thanks for any input.

What you have looks good to me. You might include more info about the stamp such as issuing country, date issued, from which set of stamps, if appropriate, and maybe even the catalog number so others could find it readily. The note about meandering rivers is interesting, but you might add a statement about the accuracy or historical significance of the map represented and/or its place in the history of cartography.

You might also get more authoritative replies if you questions were posted in the Topical section.

Thanks Don --- good information.

I didn't think of the topical forum until after I sent my message.

Sid:

I hope you get some good info from the Maps on Stamps collectors under the topical section. While not a collector of maps, I am a great map fan and find them very interesting. Maps are one of those inventions of mankind that we take for granted, but would be hard put to cope if we didn't have them.

Consider, for instance, before satellite imagery and high altitude photography, it was maps that gave us a concept of the shape of the oceans, continents, countries and localities and the distance between points. There are specialty maps for most all subjects and many of the early originals are true works of art.

All-in-all a great topic with many interesting sub-fields such as geopolitics, conquest and imperialism, demographics and geography just to name a few. You really can't mount or display them incorrectly, it's your collection, just follow your interests.

Thanks Don ----- I just may tweak your 2nd paragraph and include it in my introduction. A well-written concise statement.
