Hi CollGStamps. Very interesting.

Quote:
I've read your kiloware manifesto, KGV. It might be fun to sell, yet no fun to buy someting as expensive on paper (paper = 50% of the weight at the very least, also a minimum of 10% faulty) paying in addition for the shipping which is very pricy my way. Also one does not know exactly what is in there. In one of the lots I bought (not too expensive though) I had a few hundred ElizII penny values of 1960s included, in a different lot - all kind of other uninteresting small denominations en mass. So I concentrate on easier areas, yet when I see good Australia at sensible price, I tend to buy.

If a buyer does not know who or where the kiloware is coming from I agree very much with you.

But I do know where and who my kiloware comes from and that is very much to my advantage. To have experience in this buying area takes a lot of worry out of buying expensive kiloware. It makes the difference between a good profit or not so good profit.

A kg of Australia on paper close clipped has about 5,000 stamp in it. A kg of Australia off paper has about 15,000 stamps in it.

The not sorted $20 per kg kiloware on paper all 60c letter rate, when sorting has a reject rate of about 80% to 90% on a good day.
The sorted $60 per kg kiloware on paper all 60c letter rate, when sorting has a reject rate of about 20% to 10%.
Interesting to do the math. I know what I will get and the $60 kiloware works out cheaper for mailing as well. But I am always looking for 20% keeper kiloware at $15kg mailed but it only comes to me unsorted from 2 sources that I know of and I must buy 10 to 15 kgs at a time. Which equals a good amount of sorting time at one go.

It is interesting to break down the cost of a $2,000 kg on paper Australia International Post kiloware. Most of the damaged stamps are removed. But about 5,000 stamps breaks down to 1,000 stamps that sell for $5 each. Another 1,000 stamps $3 each. Another 2,000 stamps $2 each and a 1,000 stamps of heavy cancels or "as common as" low values.
We have a huge amount of stock of this kiloware processed and in stock books. On stand by we would have about a kg of kiloware on paper of the more common stamps that have a value of about $2. We are always looking for the very hard to get and hard to get stamps in small off paper lots. By buying these stamp off paper it stops a lot of damaged stamps getting through.

There is more profit in 60c kiloware than International Post stamps.

We have sent kiloware back to where it has come from as well!

The issues with Australian auction houses.

The day of the non computor using old stamp collector's deceased estate lots are almost gone over the last 15 years. I believe as much as 90% of this type of auction lot has gone from the auctions market place.

My beloved Ballina auction owners have passed on.

Status: Have a very high buyers tax. They need to lower there res to compensate.

Phillas auctions are bid on very aggressively but worth a look.

Edlin of Canberra have never been the same after the son took over. He seems to be more into coins.

Hallmark auctions has dropped off badly but worth a look.

Kevin Morgan Blue Owl are totally sad.

Auckland auction could not describe an Australian stamp lot if they tried.

Phoenix is on top of Australian auction houses by a long way.

I am finding people are finding me to sell their stamps.

Got some of my best KGV buys from Tasmania auctions but it went sour .

There is a lot of auction houses that have just gone away. It is very much becoming the Day Of ebay & about your one on one contacts.

To collect Australia there is no need to have more than one set of stamps in most situations. So all this talk about kiloware and auction houses is really not relevant for the Australia collector's or thinking about collecting Australia. Unless you want to try and sell some stamps on the side or your collecting 10 separate sets for the family etc.

For $20 I can buy 10 used, perfect, different sets of 5 x 45c,50c,55c or 60c letter rate stamp sets and that includes mailing & packaging. Outside Australia a $3 cost for mailing & packaging is common. This is a very popular way to get your stamps for collecting.

18 sets were released by Australia Post in 2007. Granted half of these sets include high values so it increases the cost of buying single stamps or sets.

By searching for your stamps on ebay as singles is very popular and some very good buys are out there and will continue to be out there. Some collector's with pay a bit extra for a seller that gives out great stamps, bonus stamps, service & packaging with a very recent sheet stamp for mailing.

Very informative and entertaining thread KVG

I have 2 photo boxes of Australian on paper that I think I will attempt to soak on the weekend. most are self adhesive kind so I will try your method.

I agree that Australia has beautiful stamps and I love sorting through them. Thanks to Steve (Trigg) I have a great collection started and this thread has made me want to go back and work on it(after I finish with Germany which should only take a couple more evenings).

Again thanks for the thread KVG I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dianne

I have a small (but growing) collection of the 'Roos... I'm into nice readable place names and other interesting cancels, as well as plate flaws and such.

I got interested in Australian stamps because my late Godmother lived in Australia, and she'd send me letters and magazines in envelopes with lots of stamps because she knew I was a stamp collector, as a kid. Some years later, one of my cousins moved from Denmark to Townsville and we corresponded quite a bit.

As we say in Aussie! Great postmarks on those roos you have there!

Thanks for sharing Scanstamps.

It is nice to have that background.

Nice personal touch to your Australia collection.

I have been adding aggressively to my Australian collection during the last 2-3 years. I have to admit, the Australian sellers send some of the absolute best covers/stamps when they ship. Here is one I received today containing a few album pages. The shipping charges pay for themselves with a cover like this!

2013 1st Banknote M/S or S/S has a couple of blue perfs on the top of both stamps.

On the sheet stamps the blue perfs are not present.

Yes very nice cover!

After putting all my Italian stamps on Steiner pages, I've moved on to Australia and France.

I haven't sorted my KGVs and roos yet but here's what I have so far:

http://www.mystupidhobbies.com/Stam...W/index.html

only up to 1965 so far but I have several more glassines to go through

Been a lot of fun going through things I've had no interest in in the past to getting them mounted and scanned. Been a very inexpensive hobby over the last month or so since I already had all this stuff :)
