Here is a pretty, and pretty suspect, little piece:

A Kurland overprint on a Hitler definitive, showing a Libau postmark.

Libau is an important Latvian port on the Baltic. It grew in importance because it was ice-free all winter long.

If each of the component parts are genuine (a big "if") I suspect that this is a favor cancel piece. Thoughts?

First place to check would be the reference CD'S that are put out by the GPS, they are sold on ebay and at various stampshows at their booth .Nice copy otherwise .

I have the set, in binders, and it is a wealth of information. The Kurland section is daunting.

They list Types 1-4 of genuine "6" overprints, then depict on a foldout what I assume is a full setting of the overprints as applied to a pane, then depict fraudulent surcharges in Types 1-20. They also depict a genuine and a fraudulent cancel.

My cancel seems to check out, and I can't match up my overprint with any of the 20 types of forgeries. I think my "6" is a Type 1, but I'll be honest...my eyes cross when going back and forth between so many examples.

This is the kind of piece that is faked so often that you start out assuming it isn't the real thing. Mine might be.

If someone has a different opinion, please don't be shy about sharing it.

I wish I knew more about these stamps... However this link:

will tell you more about the Kurland issue but, unfortunately in German (but Google translation will give you an idea of what is it trying to say). By clicking "Falschungen", it even tells you about possible forgeries.
