I was just wondering, considering how stamps are made, what other items in our daily lives (past or present) are produced in the same manner?
Reason this came up is because the other day I was in an antique mall searching for old broken pocket watches. I came across a WW2 German Soldier's pay voucher and realized how closely it resembled printed money, which lead me to think about the older stamps which had a similar appearance to printed money in terms of art style, texture of paper and raised ink/embossing. Kind of a weird train of thought, but more normal than most I usually have.
So I guess this is more of a technical question/discussion. I'm always interested in how technology changes throughout the years and can't help but wonder what influenced stamp production, and what did stamp production itself in turn influence?
To narrow the field, I couldn't give a hoot about modern self-adhesives. Those things are just half a step up from inkjet printer mailing labels. I'm much more interested in the classic stamp production which featured paper texture, embossing, limited colors and classic look of cross-hatched illustrations.
Is there a link between ye olde postage and ye old dollar bill artwork? I know at least one of you folks here has got the dirt on this topic!
