Was reading some literature recently. It spoke about paper toning. From what I read toning is an aging paper phenomena. Seems to me many sellers will claim toning that is actually staining not caused by natural aging of the paper. Like this zeppelin in the description calls the color in the perfs toning. Is that toning? http://www.ebay.com/itm/11125259198....m1423.l2648

"Color in the perfs"?
The color in those perfs looks suspiciously like perf tips that have absorbed gum, signaling a regummed stamp. Not saying for sure that's what's going on, but I'd be very careful. |

I agree with Duncan - it looks like sloppy re-gumming, not toning or staining. |

Doesn't regumming destroy the fiber strands from the tips of the perfs? Looks like something did stain the top right couple of perfs, doesn't look like toning to me. I'm no expert at all on detecting regums, but from what I do know of regums, that doesn't seem to qualify. |

I agree it is not a regum.
Some of the perf tips look very thin and are letting the black background colour come through the paper to me. |

If I've learned anything in my time here it's that Chasa is rarely if ever wrong. |

Toning is a natural action that can happen to paper. Staining is caused by the application of some foreign element to the stamp. Telling the difference from a scan is difficult. In this case I believe several of the top perfs have been enhanced. |

Correction! My eyes never work properly until I have finished my 1st coffee for the new day. There is 13 toned perf tip on top of stamp.
2 see through perf tips on the top line of perf mid.
And a major fault to me is the missing corner perf bottom left.
This stamp reminds me that I am a used stamp person and for good reason.

How can it be a regum with all the paper fibers hanging off the perf tips? |

Rev, that is how I understand it. It seems to me that the term toned is thrown around a lot by sellers. |

Not all regummed stamps are alike, or regummed in the same way.
Gum airbrushed onto a stamp can collect on the fibers of the perf tips. But if a stamp is put into a sweat box so that existing gum can be redistributed, say to hide a thin or to eliminate nasty hinge marks, the fibers may remain mostly undisturbed.
Not saying for sure what might have happened to this particular patient, but it sure looks like the top center has been reworked. There even seems to be a repaired thin at the top of the first "E" in ZEPPELIN that can be seen from both sides of the stamp. Given that, and the possibility that some of the top perfs have been reinforced with gum, or at least have absorbed gum, I wouldn't buy it. But it sold for over $300. |

Both gum and paper can tone, not just gum. Sometimes you will see an overall toning of a stamp. sometimes it comes in small spots. Often when it is spots it will occur at the edges.
While this one could be regummed, the perfs at top could have become gum stained by sloppy hinging. |

Newby here I don't think it is toning or stains. Looks like its only on the perfs all the way around the stamp which looks like regumming. Stains or toning don't start on all four sides at once. Usually these will start and spread but that is just my opinion. I'm still learning and could be wrong |
