I've been glossing through some old USPS Mini Albums, which in the mid-70's I think were available to young collectors (maybe through the Ben Franklin Stamp Club or similar school program), and found issues from countries that do not appear in the Scott Catalog Country index. The countries are Dubai, Fujeira, Ras Alhaima, ( Ras Aol Khaima (?))Sharjah, and South Arabia. I also have found sheets of similar country issues. Most look like they were CTO as they have undisturbed gum but cancelled. My question goes to were these postage issuing countries, or not recognized 'postage' issues by a now defunct government or what. I know that some mid-eastern countries removed from sale certain issues but not after a broker obtained them and sold them (unauthorized) but these are not even mentioned in Scott. Any information would be helpful
Sorry - I'm bumping??! I checked the Scott Index again and under the countries named Scott directs you to the 1971/1972 issues of United Arab States. The issues shown do not appear in either specific country location or in the directed United Arab States location.. so are these legit stamps or just unauthorized CTOs???
As far as I can see these so called "Dune States" had many of their stamps "illegally" printed and distributed, for that reason Scott never recognized them as legitimate. I do believe they are collected possibly heavily overseas. My father was big into them for many years, most likely because they were cheap and very colorful, and at that time Minkus numbered many of them. He usually aquired full sheets and Souvenir Sheets both mint and CTO versions. I am interested in them but because of my many other philatelic interests I just don't put much time in them. I hope one day I will dig into the sizable stash he left behind. At this time I will read about them when I come across information but that's about it.
Scott's criteria for listing includes a requirement that the stamps be valid for postage and available for sale at post offices in the country shown on the stamp. A lot of stamps of those "Trucial States" don't meet that criteria, hence they are not listed by Scott. I believe other catalogs such as Michel or Gibbons might list them, but Scott doesn't.
Thank you fellow SCF'ers: I guess that confirms what my Scott's noted, I just wanted to see if maybe there was a reference resource to go to that might help in cataloging these. I guess the USPS bought these in bulk from a broker and packaged them as 'starter albums'. They certainly are nice looking. more aesthetic than intrinsic value.
