I read the 2 aufdrucktypen in the catalogue excerpt to say that there would be two types of overprints.

Cjd, you're absolutely right of course.
I should have also scanned Type II which is on the next page over.

Here it is and it mentions that for Type II the overprint (black or violet) was applied by hand stamp typography.

Whereas Type I was maschine printing (on a press?) by
a printing company, Druckerei Gamperl
