The Mayflower is still there. It is up on Connecticut Avenue and is owned by the Renaissance Hotel chain. It is a bit of a walk (30 minutes) from it to the tourist sites around the Mall so it is not as convenient as some other hotels. And it is pricey at about $300 to $400 for a room now.
wt1: I might be incorrect on this but I think for certain special services the Post Office unit of delivery would hand stamp date & time to show when it arrived at the delivery unit for dispatch. In cities like Boston, NY, or DC (& other such large) this would easily be true for cross town 'special delivery' service ??? This gave proof of service.
