Here's a frustrating situation. It seems the USPS requires "new developments" to install "cluster mailboxes", but there's a nationwide shortage, only the USPS can install them (and they don't have the time) and adding to the confusion and frustration is the fact that the lock manufacturer (for security, the name is not disclosed) can't keep up with the backlog ... meanwhile, residents haven't had mail delivery for nearly six months!

Quote:
The nationwide shortage started after the Postal Service, which had historically manufactured the locks, decided last year to outsource to a new supplier, said Patricia Licata, a Postal Service spokeswoman in Washington, D.C. The Postal Service declined to give the manufacturer's name or reason for the backlog, citing security concerns.

"For security reasons, the Postal Service is limited to the amount of approved vendors handling the production and installation of these locks," said Dionne Montague, a Postal Service representative in Houston.

A teeny bit misleading I think. They have not had home delivery - or "cluster box" delivery. But they can get their mail at the post office - yes?

Personally I think home delivery is an expensive, obsolete service that has long outlasted its appropriateness. When's the last time you had milk or bread or fish delivered? (Speaking as a Canadian - where we shall soon see the end of it)

C.S.

Yes most home delivery has gone by the wayside but around where I live there is a company bringing back home delivery of milk in glass bottles as well as other dairy items. Yes it is expensive compared to the going to the store. I think maybe it's doubled. But they have had some success at it marketing it as fresher. Its been a while since I've been in Europe but I remember they had home delivery of beer.

Maybe in the future there still will be home mail service but charge you more for it.

Antiquated Home Delivery may be but I will sure miss it. I couldn't get to our post office every day if I had to so ending it would be devastating to my family.

It has been tried in more places than one...but it hasn't caught on anywhere for more than a year or two. It looks great on paper until people start paying the bill...and ten they opt for saving a few bucks by NOT having it delivered.

Home delivery of mail has got to go away one day. But when it does, bills will not be paid in 10 days anymore (and similar things will happen like legal notices, etc). It will take a major change in the financial system to account for it, but it has to happen one day. I hate to see it happen.

I believe everyone will be pleasingly suprised about i]home mail delivery[/i] in the future. It is far from a certain death - how about daily in-home visitation services for the elderly and ill while they deliver the dwindling mail? I was the CFO of a Home Care agency for 10 yrs and I know it will work...here's the plan:
