I have seen many nice threads from folks about what kind of hinges and mounts to use, etc.

I tend to use both. Mounts for mint and top quality used items; hinges on minimal catalog items.

But at what cat. value would folks consider using a mount instead of a hinge on a used stamp? - minimal? 50 cents? $1? $2? more?

Thanks.

Using a mount instead of a hinge, my usual cut-off is $50 catalog value. Bear in mind that a $50 retail value in Scott is worth; what someone will pay; maybe on average $15-20.

I may use mounts for cheaper items if the paper is really thin & prone to damaging; or the stamp is really old. Hope this helps. Steve

Hi

I put everything in a mount regardless of mint or used, hinged or not, inexpensive or expensive. It just makes a page look standard.

I only collect used and use hinges on most to keep my heirloom album uniform in appearance. I would use mounts if I had a mint stamp over a $1.00 real world value.

Edit: spelling correction

All my USA are mounts and all my worldwide are Dennison hinges.
However, if I had a worldwide stamp of significant value that had not been hinged, it would be mounted.
What is significant value? Not sure, but I'll know it when I see it.

I only collect used (will fill a page with mint if necessary). I only use hinges to keep the pages uniform.

ClimberSteve - So just sticking to a Scott cat. value (it's a standard that we can all see), it sounds like you would have no problem hinging a stamp that had a $40 value of less?

Interesting.

More opinions from others are very welcome. Thanks.

I use stamp mounts for everything even if the value of the stamp mount exceeds the value of the stamp.

I prefer hinges, even for more expensive stamps, as long as I use Dennison or fold-o-hinge. Mounts are pricey, can hide defects, and are too bulky for me too. I do use mounts only for very special stamps or if I like the look on the page.

All the stamps in my permanent collection get mounts regardless of condition or CV.

I like the look and, more importantly, when/if I find a better copy of a stamp, it is easy to replace. I don't have to worry about removing a hinge and skinning my album page.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

I use mounts on all of my Mint stamps regardless of the year.I use Mounts on my used stamps from Scott#1 to Scott#799 that are used also because of age and value. After 1935 or Scott#799 again only the Mint stamps get mounted. The rest ,used, are all hinged. I prefer Mint stamps over used because I like to look at the artwork of the stamp rather than looking through the postmark to see the stamp.

Vario pages and Vario F Binders for everything. I could never go to Album pages since I do collect postmarks and there really isn't an album page that suits my needs.
