I have many duplicates of some stamps that I keep for a definite reason. Somebody is always coming up with a new error or anomaly on what is considered common stamps. There is one on this thread, for instance.

I went to a garage sell on the last day of the sell, the owner had passed away and his son was cleaning out the house. He had a pile of things he was going to toss, there were 7 shoe boxes that were full of neatly stacked stamps. I asked the if he looked in the box, he said yes but did not have time or cared to go through them.
He said take them if you want....... so I did. I had and still dont have any idea what I have.

I don't collect duplicates but I keep one of every duplicate that I accumulate. The rest I give away.

Tom,

I guess it depends on how and what you're collecting. As an example, I don't really collect stamps per se (I'm not trying to fill an album). I mainly collect, or should I say accumulate, 1861s on cover that interest me and also study the 24c stamps in particular. So if you're going to mess with those, due to shade variations, a real 24c '61 geek almost can't have "duplicates". Then you get into trying to plate the damn thing..........

However, I am also working on a set of 19th century US stamps, and that's taking time as I'm a condition crank and some of them are incredibly expensive in nice shape (78c? A grills?). Other than major or known shades I don't see a need for duplicates there. I mean, how many off cover 30c 1861s do I need?

Like Dianne, I have purchased quite a few large lots recently. These are not kiloware but whole or partial country collections. You can't help but end up owning many duplicates. I also don't throw out any good quality stamps, so they tend to accumulate.

Rileysan, any of those 400 #114s on gray paper? I've Been looking for one for a long time

Along with the no-grill variety, that's a glaring omission from my collection :)

Interesting point to be made about the gray paper variety - I see that Scott doesn't list a price for it unused. Considering the relatively low price for one used, I find it hard to believe no one has located one in mint!

NBSTAMPER

We really have to try to get together I just noticed you are less than an hr away from where I am. The Fredericton Stamp Club has a Stamp Show on March 29th. You should try to attend.

I do most of the baking so there will be treats.

Definatly a hoarder mentality here but have at least a rubbermaid tote of stuff I'll likely give away. I always look for things I don't have or have seldomly seen but my achilles heel is Canada large queens. Regardless of condition I can always find a little more room and short of winning the lottery finding all varieties is a lifetime venture.

Not sure if I should create a new thread, but do any of you donate your dupes to groups? If so, which ones? I have a bunch of low value dupes (WW and US) that I am looking to donate and I just want to make sure they find a good home.

Hundreds if not thousands if one is specializing and studying a single stamp or issue looking for varieties and plate positions.
