All this talk of hinges makes me want to buy a pack of 1000 off of ebay while they're still available. I don't even hinge, but I feel I should have some just in case.

I think you're on to something here!

The value of hinges has far outpaced that of stamps - especially Dennison hinges - which has appreciated 500-1000% over the past 25 years.

I believe the future of investing lies with stamp hinges!!

The secret to a good stamp hinge is glassine paper and gum arabic. I don't think that hinges are made with these things anymore.

Fold-o-Hinges are still out there and are cheap enough to buy a few packets for future use. I like them and almost as peelable as Dennison .As always watch how much moisture is apply to the hinge.

I am a big fan of Fold-O-hinges too and I am always keeping my eye out for them! There are modern versions using look-a-like packaging so beware!

I agree that Dennison or Fold-O-Hinge may be the best. I have also had real good luck with "Hygrade" hinges and with a (possibly no brand name) hinge sold by the Treat Hobby Company (now out of business...but existing envelopes will say "Treat" on it somewhere). Both of them appear identical to Dennison and may have been made by Dennison. Warning: Each of the companies may have sold hinges made by other companies under the same brand name...if it is sort of a greenish hinge, get it.

I've using SuperSafe. The package says made in Germany. I had some Dennisons that I used before getting back into the hobby a few years ago.

using SuperSafe and Prinz. I would prefer Fold-O-Hinge if I can find them at a cheap price.

Gum Arabic, horse gelatin, one layer, two layer ...

Q/ Where is Abby Sciuto, now that we need her?

Grad students with curious minds, time on their hands, and access to test equipment are a dime-a-dozen, aren't they?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey
