thank you so much for continuing to help me. I know we are on two different forums, which one should I be replying to? (the other one seems to be getting more traffic)
back in 2010 when I first got the notion of researching these stamps, I purchased a new set of the DOVE stamps from
ebay. They arrived in a pack of 20, folded and sealed in a wax like paper. (like of like those cheap bic lead pencils). I tore up my room last night trying to find them since I never opened the package (I hate being so unorganized). I think these are the exact same way they would have came out of the vending machine since it wasnt a flimsy sheet or anything. I have been researching last night and I cannot find something similar posted online, so I am lead to believe they were packaged individually (probably by usps).
"U.S. Postage 20 Unused G Stamps Blue Dove #3698" this was the exact title of the
ebay listing I purchased. I looked up #3698 and it came up with a different stamp so they were listed incorrectly.
last night I searched
ebay and purchased this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191064045479 (listing was ending soon and for 6 bucks it wasnt going to break the bank) in hopes that it might be the same style as I purchased form
ebay before. however, I am a bit confused, on the listing they say 1997, and at 32 cents. I could not find any of these stamps issued in 1997 or at this price
i dont believe the alligator stamp is the correct one. In my gut, I cannot break away from the notion of a FISH. Now I am color blind so I might have mixed up the colors as a kid,
the pumpkin seed stamp seems to fit the bill for a few reasons. even though they were issued as a sheet stamp but so were the dove stamps so they could have been packaged individually and they are the only fish stamp with sort of the right colors (i see it as an orange fish which might not be what others are seeing) issued between 1990 through 1995.
a few reasons why I am a bit hesitant is the price. they are marked as 45 cents. if the dove ones from the recent
ebay listing are correct at 32 cents then it makes sense, but I am not sure. they were also only released in 1992 (from what I am finding online) and my father was in the hospital in 1994-1995. it could be possible that since these were individually wrapped and sold in a Hospital (not a post office, I cant think of people buying stamps frequently from a vending machine in a hospital). also, it is possible the vending machine was not run by USPS so the prices and things inside the vending machine are controlled by the owner of the machine.
to answer your question, he passed away in January 1995. he stayed in the hospital on and off from August 1994 till Jan 1995. I remember he did stay in the hospital a few times prior to that but I dont remember details and I think these stamps were form the august-jan time frame.
Now, I am far from a philatelist, so I am not sure if my reasoning is being ideal here or just my wishful thinking.
what do you guys think??
