Hey All, Am I right thinking this is a type of Doremus machine cancel with the 7 lines? I just have never seen one with the service letters and numbers like you would on an International machine cancel. Thanks, Will

Will, The cancel is a Time Cummins from a type J142 machine. The Cummins were manufactured in Chicago. |

Thanks Russ! Since the date and time are not on the same line it threw me off from considering Time-Cummins. I looked back at Helbock's book on postmarks. He mentioned the type J cancel, but neglects to show an illustration. |

I Love Stamps - That's a good starting point, but really limited in scope. I've used Helbock's Postmark book which has more details and that's really not complete either. Are there any really complete books on U.S. machine cancels without having to buy a multi-volume set? Ot at least one for 19th Century and another for 20th Century. Mack and Levitt machine cancels still are a mystery to me as well and would be nice to have information on them. I know they are both rarer, but nice to know in case I come across one. |

Battlestamps I had no idea that it was that incomplete. That is valuable information that I had no idea about, like many things it's always a learning curve. I have been very interested in machine cancels for a few years now and and resource material is welcome knowledge. Thank you kindly! -Jeff |

Did you know that as far as I can tell this is the only thread on the internet that makes any mention at all of Helbock's Postmark book? How does one get a hold of a copy of this book? Here was my search query for your scrutiny. ["Helbock's Postmark book"]https://www.google.com/search?q=[%22Helbock%27s+Postmark+book%22]&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&hs=2dS&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&filter=0&biw=1440&bih=781 |

He has a few books. I have "Postmarks on Postcards". I found a copy through Amazon awhile back via a third party seller called Second Story Books out of Maryland (I've been to their store too - good book dealer). It's probably not in print like so many philatelic books, but just search around and it will pop up someplace. |

I just looked at Amazon and there's a few used copies for under $30, but if you have a Kindle you can get it for about $15 with a digital download. |
