The Brigham Canada large queens auction is today online now at

http://stampauctionnetwork.com//BG/bg1.cfm

Some of the final closed bids can be already seen for items that have already been auctioned off earlier today.

Canada # 32 which is the highlight of this auction appears to currently be at around $525,000.00

Aside from the 32 the other items are simply amazing. Some of the blocks and various color proofs are spectacular. Not sure what the final totals will be but there are alot in excess of 10,000 plus that 525,000 (likely to go up) . I wonder if Brigham will divulge wether he net profited or lost on all this. He's getting all the premiums anyway but on just his past purchase price vs prices realized.

The block of 2c large queens showing the complete Bothwell Clutha Mills watermark went for $300,000. This block was the one used to show the full watermark in all unitrade catalogs. Quite a famous show piece. I'm estatic when I find bothwell paper even without showing the watermark. Stuff like this you just can't collect you have to acquire . I can't wait for watermarks to be auctioned this fall his was a true find and I hope does at least as well.

I think that this unique full watermark showpiece large block got Mr. Brigham to be the only Canadian invited as part of the Prince of Monaco's Grand Prix Stamp Exhibit.

The auction indicates a number of Canada Scott#22 one cent large queens as being red brown yet none of my Scott-related catalogues mention this colour but rather brown red. My old Stanley Gibbons and Hansen catalogues do use red brown. Are they using what they perceive to be the correct colour designation and applying it to this Scott number or has something happened recently that I've missed.

I watched the whole auction and really enjoyed all of those expensive beautiful stamps. That was very educational.

Well I hope my #32 does a little better but sure would not be disappointed for the amount Brigham got. Boy that auction went dead quiet when they opened the bidding...that was eerie...

They were hoping for close to 1 million for # 32, but they got around half of that. However, the Scott listed catalog value for this stamp has almost doubled for it from this auction. Hopefully, this will be reflected in the upcoming catalog listings such as $200,000 U.S. changing to $400,000 U.S.

You got to think, that overall, if this was not his auction house, he would have been real disappointed in the prices realized. Very few items sold for full catalogue, let alone the estimates. Usually the estimates are bang-on, if you have ever dealt with Maresch and Eastern. For the majority of the items, they were lucky to get 50-60% of estimate.

I put in a bid and forgot about it, since the auction was late at night my time. Lost by $10. D'oh. I am more interested in the other auctions though. Large queens are a bit too grandiose for my budget. I wonder if there will be auctions to get rid of everything, not just the top stuff?

I did a quick calculation of the total sales (assuming I didn't enter the numbers wrong in the spreadsheet)...

Sub total: $2,532,250
15% commission: $379,838
Total: $2,912,088

(If I get another moment I will double-check the entries)

Re: Scott #3
The Brigham collection has probably the finest pair known. I suspect he also has other singles (perhaps a cover or two?).

They have been posting his exhibits here: http://thebrighamcollection.com/exhibits/, but the Pence exhibit is not yet available.

I am still a little puzzled by the sale of #32. Yesterday they showed they had a bid of $525,000 but today they opened the bidding at $475,000. Very strange....
