Nice stamps. That 1c laid paper is quite a good looker, and the flaws made it manageable from a price point. The "perfect" 1c laid paper used sold for $11,500, with the premium.

One thing I found interesting was how small the percentage of used stamps without flaws, as compared to those with pulled or other perforation flaws or thins was.
There weren't too many used stamps in great condition in the collection.
(I upgraded a 1c with watermark and added the 2c LQ with the re-entry. Even though it's centered a bit high, it's a stamp I've been looking for for a while.)

I would have liked to get one of the Pirie watermarks, but didn't have it in me to bid as high as I would have needed to.
1 cent watermarked:

2 cent re-entry:

Rumour has it, that the #32, never sold. Apparently the reserve was never met.

I heard that rumor, too. Also heard that other stamps not bid on in the auction had the same fate. I thought it was a no reserve auction. They marked all the stamps as sold on line. I wonder what is going on.

They were expecting close to 1 million dollars, but instead they got close to $500,000 CDN for it which is around half. Was the original $525,000 CDN the reserve price that was shown as a suggestion? Anyways, my Unitrade Canada lists # 32 as a fine used copy for $250,000 CDN and as a very good used copy for $125,000 CDN. Out of two known listed copies at the time (of which there are now three known copies), the Brigham # 32 appears to be the fine used copy listed at $250,000 CDN which will probably be listed at around $500,000 CDN in a new catalog which is double if it did just sell at auction. At least the catalog value for this stamp should almost double if it did sell. Also, should they have had their auction in U.S. dollars instead? (The Scott Catalog has this stamp listed at $200,000 U.S.)

The above is a quote from Watermark. Thanks Watermark.

Nice observation. I am starting to wonder about some of these auctions and their lack of transparency and ethics. Who monitors them? I know they list many names of so called experts and monitors but all are hired by the auction firm. I have had what I thought a winning bid on some expensive stamps at what I thought were good buys on my part, usually 20-50% catalog but below the auction estimate.

Well after a couple of days in the dark (no communication)they tell me that I was outbid by a tie bid that came in earlier. How does this happen without proof. They are full of many excuses, this has left a bad taste in my mouth towards online auction houses. SAN can be very frustrating unless it is a live auction. I hate being kept in the dark for many days after I bid especially when it is showing me as high bidder when they close the online part.

I am probably getting off topic here, this can now be called a rant on my part, sorry.

It is frustrating to find out 5 days later that the hard to find stamp you bought has somehow disappeared.Without proof.

I guess that another advantage of running your own auction and selling your own material on it is that you can decide whether or not to let the lot go at the highest price that has been bid on it. I don't know if they are doing this or not, but there are some auctions where only they buy and only they own the material that they are selling on their auction so that when they receive a bid that meets their own reserve or expectation then they sell off the item. Otherwise, they just relist the same item until it sells by reaching what they want for it.

Also, for biding on items on the stamp auction network (SAN) online, you have to be very patient in waiting for an indication that you won the auction lot. They have to go through things online very carefully and I have had to sometimes wait until I was notified that I won a lot and it can sometimes take some time.

The auction site still lists the stamp as "sold" (link posted early in the thread by jogil.) And a thought about the variation in bids - does currency exchange have anything to do with it?

I recall during the auction that the auctioneer would say the bidder number of the winner of most lots, but she did not say the number of the winner of Canada # 32 which may have been to protect the identity of the bidding winner for this stamp.
