I recently came across a UPU presentation folder, from the 1939 UPU convention in Buenos Aires. Apparently these were given out at the convention, and contained one each of all the then-current Canadian stamps. There are 21 stamps, including the Royal Visit issue, the KGVI Mufti issue, the 1938 pictorial issue (both shades of the 10-cent), as well as a few BOB issues. The 2014 Unitrade value of the stamps is a bit over C$430.
To add to the interest, the book is signed by the PMG of the day (Norman McLarty) and it also includes a personal letter from him, giving it as a gift to a friend of his (who in turn gave the booklet to my father).
I'm not looking to sell the item, but I am curious as to whether it has much value beyond that of the stamps themselves.
That's good to know - thank you. I figured there might be a historical interest with the letter, as it adds a bit of a personal touch to the item. I'm sure if the PMG went on to bigger political things then it might be even more valuable.
Just out of curiosity, would you (or anyone else) care to hazard a guess as to what I might be able to get if I were to sell it? I know that even though the stamps have a certain catalogue value, I might realize about 10% of that for the stamps themselves, if I was lucky. My thought is that the folder, and the letter from the PMG, would add to their value, although I don't know by how much. As I said in the initial post, I'm not looking to sell it, but if someone suggested some ridiculously large amount, I might be swayed.
I thought I might be able to answer this as I have seen similar items for sale at various auctions. Unfortunately I can's seem to find any with prices realized. If you are really interested, I would recommend sending a friendly e-mail to a few of the major auction houses that specialize in Canada. If they have sold any before, they could give you a ball-park $ value.
(eg. Eastern Auctions or maybe Maresch) Bow City Philatelic also sells quite a few similar items.
Thanks for the tought - I should do that. The fact that Bow City sells "quite a few" items leads me to think they're not all that valuable. For mine in particular, I think the letter from the PMG might add something, but whether it's worth selling is another question.
I'll fire off a couple of emails and let everyone know what kind of response I get.
