Tonight, how about a couple U.S. possessions? The Cuba overprint postcard was issued shortly after the Spanish-American War. The Hawaiian cover came out while Hawaii was still a kingdom. I love the scene of Honolulu harbor -- I think that's Diamondhead in the center from a different angle than the typical view from Waikiki.

ikeyPikey - Thanks for your observations about the problem of language suppression.

I quite enjoy reading messages dating back to the days of my ancestors. Two of my great-uncles had been POWs in Siberia during WWI, one of them returning home via the Panama Canal, the other via Singapore and the Suez Canal.

As for the POW's address, the writer's daughter may have asked for it in her previous letter, so it was added without any comment as there was no more space left on the postcard.

Cheers,

Florián

I've always had a fondness for letter-cards -- sealed sheets that required no envelope and traveled like a postcard. The interiors were entirely blank for writing; the sender just licked and sealed the gummed selvage and the recipient tore it off at the perforations. They always seemed more efficient somehow, although they were still charged at the letter rate.

Here are four, from various points on the globe: Netherlands, Brazil, Monaco, and French Colonies.

GregAlex: Letter Cards can be a nice specialty collection within stationery collections. Most all of the countries used them for a period of time. Some countries in Europe still have a modernized version of these letter cards. Heck, the US even used them for a bit. Thanks for sharing.
PS. Getting used ones with the outer portion still attached after they have been opened is a fun challenge. Perforation varieties also exist on many of these cards. Good collecting.

More refugees from a bargain box at the ASDA NY:

- a pair of fresh MNHOG letter cards from Sweden, and

- an old, dirty, stained GPU (Genuinely Postally Used) letter card from the UK to Germany.

The Swedes will probably find their way to a UPSS (United Postal Stationery Society) circuit book some day.

The letter card Franz sent to Anna from Watford is a keeper.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Today: Germany after the WWII event.
First two East Germany (German Democratic Republic) items. First a modern postal card issued 1989 (Michel # P102) issued for a stamp show in Paris. I like the basic Red/White/Blue colors...

Next: a little older GDR (DDR) item. Their first Letter Sheet issued in 1957. (H&G # F-G-1):

The next two items are earlier, when Germany was controlled by the Americans, the British, the French and the Russians.
The first is a postal card issued under the British Occupation in 1945. This card was a blanked out Hitler item, with a new rate printed on the card...

Finally for this post, a occupation card from the Soviet Control period. This card was released in 1945 for use in the Province of Saxony, Halle Postal District...

Well done, Florian! Is gTranslate correct? She wanted to go to a fortune teller? I would wonder if this were sarcasm or exasperation - eg, "I might as well go to a fortune teller as wait for you to declare your intentions towards me" - but, just a few years later, Houdini was making war on folks who would contact your war dead, so she may have literally meant that she was going to a seer to inquire about his future. Cheers,

ikeyPikey, those were the days of fortune tellers and seers visited by broken-hearted girls ...

Well then, he further says:

pulling your leg."

Cheers,

ikeyPikey: It is your card, but I would leave the airmail sticker on it to show why there are extra stamps added.

codexluminati: The Seychelles cover is GREAT! Syechelles cancel, Reunion cancel as well. Nice!
