I have quite a few pieces of early postal stationery to post, which I'll scan as time allows. Some come with questions, so I'll start with this one. It appears to be a cover from a country in the German Confederation -- Wurttemburg? -- which used the silbergroschen as a unit of currency. Any help identifying the country and approximate date of use would be appreciated. Also, any idea why the embossed postage was placed in the upper left instead of the right?

To me it looks like Prussia, around 1860.

According to my Higgins and Gage it's a 1855 Prussia , the 2 lines of grey text in angle above the stamps, the graving on the ring and the curved flap are the clue. but can't say the exact type because the embossing on the flap is too much damage to see it well, and this remove value to the cover.

Prussia! That was my next guess. Thanks for the info.

Here are two more. The flaps on these are the puzzlers. The one from Canada appears to have a secondary flap -- perhaps for added security?

The envelope from Great Britain seems the opposite of secure. There is no gum on the flap, the tab simply tucks into a slot. That would imply that it was intended to be easily opened. What sort of mail would this have been used transport?

Dates on these would also be helpful.

Robson Lowe gives the GB envelope as 1 January 1893 and the Canada as 14 June 1895. My memory from the late 50s/early 60s is that it was still cheaper to post a letter in GB if you didn't seal it - I suspect that may explain the open-ability.

Thank you -- interesting that they were still using the "young Victoria" portrait into the 1890s.

Here are a few more British Commonwealth postcards. I like the thistle design on the card from New South Wales; it's printed on extremely thick cardboard.
