I have never had a problem soaking stamps to remove hinges although I just had a problem when I soaked an 1870 Russian Scott 20d. The ink flaked off in small areas of the stamp. Would this indicate that this stamp is a forgery?

Coinwatcher, not necessarily! With some inks you have to be careful . If you get the stamp too close to water strange things will happen. From my own experience, some Dutch East Indies stamps will do this also!

I just did the same thing to a Russian Scott 27, a very similar stamp and all was well. Here is the before and after. So a cancelled forgery is good? BEFORE SOAKING AFTER SOAKING |

Again, it is not a sign of a forged stamp! Some inks are sensitive to water. As I stated above, the Dutch East Indies regular series of 1934-37 are printed with an ink that can disappear when soaked in water. Stamps that have been in water too long look exactly like yours!

I did not soak more than 5 minutes and I noticed something going on so removed it from the water. Notice even the groundwork is now blotchy. A little discouraged over this one as I have ruined it. At least it was not to expensive. |

These were printed on chalky paper, which when exposed to water gives off design + cancellation ink. It was one of the early methods of preventing stamp re-use. |

sdtom - I love the comment! I've torn or otherwise damaged stamps when trying to lift them out of old albums. Years ago I would have tossed the stamp out, but now I simply repair it with a hinge and mount it in the album. I often wonder if anyone in the future will be picking through my album and wonder what the prior owner was thinking. |
