Is anyone able to identify this perfin for me or is it pretty much hopeless? (It seems as though its a rather obscure series of holes as compared to most perfins that form some series of letters.)

That is the previously unknown Long Island Railroad smoke-from-a-locomotive perfin.

Okay, maybe not :(

Cheers,

WT1: Jamaica, NY only had one perfinned precancel item. It is [NEMO] usually a very poorly punched pattern. Nemo Hygenic Institute, JAmaica, NY. US pattern N70. E value. That should answer your question, and no it wasn't the big dipper! Ha!.

Am I right in thinking that they just kept using the perforator after some of the pins broke. I like the way you think Mike. :)

Thanks for the info. I never knew that there was only one perfin known with a precancel from Jamaica, NY.

I did a search and found that I posted some of these Nemo perfins that were previously identified but the perfins don't look anywhere near the same!

Interestingly, Nemo Hygienic (Fashion) Institute was a corset company!

Thanks for the additional info.

Not surprising, after receiving the information about the identity of this perfin, I was actually able to line up the dots in that sad excuse for a perfin (my first scan) to the NEMO perfin.
