I've had this strip for quite a while and I can not find any information on its provenance. Can anybody help me out? I assume it's a cinderella. Thanks!

Hi. You should contact John M. Walsh (info@nfldstamps.com) from http://www.newfoundlandstamps.com/

Thank you for posting these--anything Newfoundland gets my attention.

I have seen this now and again, and while I have never met a Newfie item that didnt open my wallet, I've never bought one.

They are not official stamps of course and evocative of the 1910 John Guy stamps in general--though they date from around 1900.

They are not in Unitrade, but I believe in Walsh/Butts the "NSSC", they are referenced as bogus items. It was not uncommon back then for private companies to create stamps.
Sometimes they "break the ice" and get some sort of recognition among collectors or quasi-officially. These are not mentioned in Boggs seminal history book, I believe (but will check tonight). They are referenced by Walsh/Butts who writes that he is "often asked" about them (so I wouldnt bother contacting them).

More specifically, they are referenced with a photo on page 140 on the NSSC, and described as "Paris Essays"; grouped there with some other bogus stamps by Roessler (an air mail stamp, which I do have), and some Labrador labels (I also have these--only because they were throw-ins for a collection I bought).

If I were you, I would keep them if you like Newfoundland. If not, sell them or trade them--either on ebay or I might be interested. Hard to say what they are worth, but safe to say not a lot.

thanks so much Tommy! I've probably had them for about 10 years, and every so often I'll consult the google to try to find something out. Every time I've come up empty. Usually you can find SOMETHING, especially since lots of cinderellas find there way onto ebay. I would suspect they aren't very common, but it really doesn't matter as they they have a special place in my NF collection. Since I make my own pages, I really would like to add a description to the page. Your comment finally gives me some info to go on.

Well looky here! Using info from Tommy's post, I was able to find this page contained in Newfoundland Fakes and Forgeries by Ed Wener, available as an e-book on jacestamps.com. (Google it) Funny no year is listed for these cinderellas. Can anyone help me figure that out?

One more thing. Although in the BNA articles gum is not mentioned, my strip is gummed. Unfortunately on the 10c value there is a thin where the gum is pulled away. Thanks for all the help everybody!

An interesting tidbit (only because I'm a Massachusetts resident) is that I've never heard of Williamsville, Mass., so I looked it up. It's post office was discontinued all the way back in 1925. It's a section of Hubbardston, MA today (Northern Worcester County). In fact, if you blow up the 1870 map shown at this link, you'll note several "Hale" listings that resided in the area, presumably relatives to the William B. Hale referenced in the previous posts:
