Hi
I have collected stamps for 40 years I also inherited my mothers collection.
I am curious about a stamp I have it is the same as the 1851 Franklin facings to he right.. however all of these stamps I have found are blue mine is a reddish brown. It appears to be canceled. Does anyone have any information on this.
Thanks a bunch ..l

Welcome to Stamp Community Family, Ladebug!

Please post a picture if possible. Otherwise, it will just be guesswork.

Welcome to SCF, Ladebug! I can't tell you exactly what you have, but I can tell you what it is not. This is not an actual US postage stamp. The stamp appears to be based on the 1851 1c Franklin issue, but is either a private reprint (something cut out of an album or something similar) or a forgery. I don't think it's the latter since this stamp never existed in this color.

Is there anyway you could take an in-focus picture? That would help tremendously! Brian could it be a trial color proof? it almost loks too messy for that though. Match and medicine maybe?

I thought about that, Jeff, and couldn't find anything listed in either proofs or essays. Not to say I didn't miss something, but the fact that it has a fake cancellation kind of makes this a open & closed case. I would be interested to see a better scan, however. I kind of want to know if I could see it as a forgery if it were the correct color!

That's the only reason I thought about the trial colors but then I must agree that cancel is super badly faked. Still an interesting item though. Thanks!

Yes it's 100% a forgery. Still, if I was you, I'd keep ahold of it. It's still collectable!

I don't believe anyone ever tried to present this as a "real" stamp so I would use the term "facsimile", since it is not the original color.
