A trip back in time, perhaps:

Ellensburg, Washington

Here's an interesting read on the last of these "antiques" that still may be in use around the country:

Wow. So the USPS had post boxes that hovered. Really quite amazing.

The USPS was decades ahead of their time, but that was not the case here. What you are actually looking at is an image from the movie "Back to the future II" in a cut scene in which Marty McFly, using a hoverboard, mails a letter to his future self - with hilarious results.

I did a bunch of construction projects for the USPS over the years. There were things like that I should have saved, but I didn't. You can only save so much crap. I did save a really ornate brass mail slot and a countertop stamp vending machine. I threw or recycled many things that I would save today. If I could only join Marty McFly and go back to 1985.

There is a closed Walmart in Minneapolis you could buy. Then think of the material you could save. For me I'm in the opposite mode. If I haven't used it in a year I get rid of it.

Pardon the distraction....at first I thought this was a thread about mailboxes, so I hunted down a funny one I have...but now that I re-read the thread, it is different than I thought.

But we can always use a good laugh, correct?

Driving down the road near Princeton University in New Jersey in 2012, I stopped at a traffic light and looked over to my left to see this gem...I had to get a photo!

The Force is strong with this one....
