Another ROTW (Rest of the World) hotel: Soviet Architecture at its most Soviet. Yikes! The best part of this card is the nice, tied lighthouse stamp; unless, of course, you prefer the nice, tied bird stamp. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Another ROTW (Rest of the World) hotel: the Hotel Kross in Merano, South Tyrol, Italy. Now that I've seen more than one of its type, I even know what that stamp is about ;) Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Hotel Bristol, Warsaw. Opened in 1901, this luxury hotel was one of the very few buildings in Warsaw which survived WWII relatively unscathed. Warsaw 24 August 1908, to Prague Poland was still part of Russia hence the Cyrillic "Warszawa" postmark Today http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Bristol,_Warsaw |

Another ROTW (Rest of the World) hotel: the Montenvers Hotel in Chamonix. Chamonix is in tiny corner of France, with Switzerland to north & east, and Italy to east & south. You will be forgiven if that reminds you of Grand Fenwick. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Michael, this is a splendid thread! I've stayed in two of these hotels: the Kosmos in Moscow (1985) and Hotel Edda in Kirkubaejarklustur (1987). They were every bit as bad as they look. |

Quote: ... Rather foreign for me to be posting in this type of thread, but it's the only oppertunity for me to show this card ... My SCF Postulate: there is just about nothing that you can add to your collection that will not, sooner or later, be fodder for a post to SCF. Quote: ... I've stayed in two of these hotels ... Nice idea for a Twilight Zone episode. Guy has a busy life, what with car accidents, skiing accidents, train wrecks, bad hotels. Starts following a postcard thread in a forum. One-by-one, random strangers post reminders ... Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Another ROTW (Rest of the World) hotel: The Gresham, in Dublin, Ireland. There's no thread for Incidental Near-Miss Maxicards, but this guy might qualify: - the image is of the hotel; - the pre-printed advertising message is from a radio station inside the hotel; - the slogan cancel ("License Your Radio Promptly") relates, incidentally, to listening to that radio station. (Americans: some countries support their public radio & television stations with a universal license fee levied on radio & television sets. Don't worry: their citizens hate these fees with a venom we reserve for our national legislature.) http://www.gresham-hotels-dublin.com/ ... Yes, Virginia, the hotel is still there! Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

I don't think most British viewers/listeners hate the licence fee with a venom. Now the Dirty Digger, that's another question!

littleriverphil - Back in 1994, I spent my holiday in Lombardy and visited the places such as Colico on Lake Como, Sondrio, ecc. connected with your post on https://goscf.com/t/37126&whichpage=2#373650 , so here is a translation of the message on your card: Lago di Como - Colico - Piazza S. . So it turns-out that the Gstaad Palace has always looked this good: https://www.palace.ch/en/ ... check-out the home page video! But what grabbed my attention was the message on the back: Fortunately, for the sake of my philatelic self-respect, there was also an interesting slogan cancel: http://www.geneve-int.ch/1872-alabama-arbitrationMediation and arbitration are two very different things, so beware the vagaries of gTranslate, never mind that the claims for the event might be a little, uh, positive. Quote: On 15 September 1872, the Alabama arbitration is pronounced in Geneva. For the first time, a dispute between two nations is settled through international mediation.
The arbitration tribunal condemned Great Britain to pay a heavy compensation to the United States of America for having failed to respect its international obligations of neutrality during the American Civil War. The ruling underlined that the Government of Great Britain failed to prevent the delivery, from its territory, of about twenty armed boats - including the Alabama - to Southern Confederates.
