So it turns-out that there is some spot - a bend in the highway? a competing spa? - that is the exact best spot from which to photograph the St Blasien abbey & spa of Luisenruhe, Baden, Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankt_Blasien ... both an historic Abbey and a Spa town Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey With thanks to the Wikicommons ... |

The Grand Hotel Excelsior & New Casino in Rapallo IT. http://www.excelsiorpalace.it/en/we...tel/history/ ... and it's still there! My card is hand-dated 19310427, postmarked GENOVA FERROVIA. One of my fave postcard sub-piles is of artist's renderings, most often of hotels ... but I also have plenty of artist's renderings of the 1964 NY World's Fair & 1968 Montreal Expo exhibits. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

The Grand Hotel Central Bagni, in Salsomaggiore, Italy. I'm thinking that the old hotel is not there, but has been replaced by the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi, in Bormio, Italy ... which is not nearby. Compare the postcard of the Salsomaggiore hotel (postmarked 19250901) with the photograph of the Bormio hotel (courtesy of TripAdvisor) ... look familiar? There's a backstory, but I could not find it after a (very) modest effort. BTW, the scribbled note on the Grand Hotel Miramonti postcard (below) (above) seems to say that the sender is on his way to Salsomaggiore ... cool, eh? Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

I Grandi Alberghi della Mendola in South Tyrol, Italy. These old collotypes are monochrome, sure, but the level of detail can be astounding. Our card shows The Grand Hotels of the Mendola ... well, two of them, anyway ;) It is easy to Google-up references to Passo delle Mendola a/k/a The Mendel Pass. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passo_della_Mendola ... 1363m ... ~10mi SW of Bolzano. The card is manuscript-dated 19250531, postmarked TORRICELLA SABINA 19250602, and postmarked ROMA CENTRO 19250603. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torricella_in_Sabina ... Torricella Sabina is ~30mi NE of Rome, which puts it ~400mi S of The Mendel Pass ... so did they buy the card & travel with it & eventually mail it? or, was the card for sale all the way down by Rome? Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

At first blush, the Carlton Hotel in Cannes (its cupolas are visible to the left of this card) appears unexceptional. One can, for example, readily imagine a holidaying ikeyPikey murmuring sweet nothings to a wealthy blonde of a certain age in its lobby, before sauntering off to continue his successful run at the chemmy table. The interest lies in the cupolas, which were supposedly modelled on the breasts of the famous Spanish-born courtesan, La Belle Otero, lover of many of the crowned heads of Europe. |

Look at her waist! Clearly, her kidneys had to go somewhere!

I'm really enjoying this topic, and it's made me think again about what I do when I go to a stamp fair! I've snagged a few of these holiday postcards in the past, my favourites have a pinhole or a cross marking the window of the room or the building that the writer is occupying. |
